Google

By ruddy28 on June 7, 2014

googleFounded by Larry Page  and Sergey Brin, Ph.D students from Stanford university.  Larry Page is the cofounder of Google and the inventor of PageRank, the foundation of Google’s search ranking algorithm.  Sergey Brin, originally from Russia, is the cofounder of Google and inventor of a data mining system that, combined with Pages’ algorithm created a powerful search engine.

They co-authored “The Anatomy of a Large-Scale Hypertextual Web Search Engine” together and built their first search engine that would bring all of the world’s knowledge together. They put their studies on hold to start Google out of a rented garage. Google was incorporated in September of 1998 and is now an American multinational corporation that has experienced rapid growth.  Brin and Page have been named as one of the top 100 innovators under the age of 35 by MIT Technology Review TR100 and given Honorary MBA’s from IE Business School for embodying the spirit of entrepreneurship.

There products, to name a few ,  include their search engine, cloud computing, software, email, office suite Google Drive, social networking Google +,Operating system Chrome OS, their netbook Chromebook,  communications software, and  augmented reality technology Google Glass.  Google’s search engine is a starting point for students.  With increasing usage of their office suite, Google Drive, and the growing popularity of Chomebooks in schools, not to mentions Google Apps for Education, Google is poised to revolutionize K-12 education in a way we have been expecting since the invention of the internet.

It is amazing what two great minds and a vision can accomplish.  I believe these two embody the term ‘innovator’.  Page and Brin’s talents and combination of inventor and entrepreneur, continue to find new horizons and investors willing to explore with them.  Their team continues to push the limits and look for new areas to expand into. With over 40,000 in staff, or ‘Googlers’ as they like to call them, they are inspiring new and creative ways to push the boundaries of technology.

I also agree that these two founders have incredible minds and vision. I think part of that also stems from their ability to hire people who embody the same qualities that they have and continue to make the company so successful. As Ana pointed out - the idea that their name suggests an action or is a common place saying is a testament to their success.

I also find it inspiring that Google continues to partner with other ventures and develop new innovations. Part of the success of the entrepise is their vision and ability to evolve and grow.

Their innovation has been of great scope and Google is the entrance point into the virtual world for most users. What I find fascinating about these innovators is that not only have they created something uniquely of value, but the way Google has revolutionized how and where people go for mining of information and consequently changing the way people interact. Although I still see social value in people asking each other about certain stuff for bonding purposed, I also notice more and more that people would just answer to any query one might have with: Just Google it, or let me Google that for you (there is an actual mocking style website if one wants to be really funny/"insulting", I guess. It's called: Let me google that for you: http://lmgtfy.com/?q=google+founders. Check it out! Google also has enriched our language for one more verb that is becoming a high frequency one and almost as powerful as: Just do it!

To begin with a disclaimer: Page and Brin were both Ph.D students at an Ivy League university, so they are obviously both intelligent and have access to education and connections beyond those of most people. However, many others have previously been intelligent and had this same access. In my opinion, the two main reasons that Page and Brin have had such an impact on the world as we know it are vision and collaboration. Conventional pre-Google wisdom held that the two were not following 'conventional' business practices, but they had the ability to foresee what they wanted to do and go for it. As with many of the other founding teams in the Founder Parade, they also realized that 'multiple heads are better than one' and not only collaborated with each other, but also made a point of hiring intelligent people when they were building their business.
