Venture Pitch : BridgET

By yy on July 30, 2014

Hello everyone!

These are  my elevator pitch and venture pitch proposal. The elevator pitch is embedded below. The venture pitch is a digital booklet.

I am looking forward your comments and feedbacks.

Venture Pitch : BridgET

Reflection

The idea of my venture is based on my experience at the workplace where iPad programs had been used at the start of the school year. The senior professors could not figure out the pointer-sliding action to turn on the devices. There is an obvious gap in faculty members’ technological skills and knowledge. The strengths in my proposal are: 1) ideas are based on my experiences, 2) market and academic research support the lack of sufficient professional development to improve digital skills for higher education professionals, 3) having multilingual services for wider markets. In my research, there was no proven data that illustrated the comparison of degree in the digital skills gap by countries, yet my hypothesis was that the gaps in some non-Western countries are wider than that of the Western countries because many of the educational technological development so far has been Western driven. The future of BridgET carries the hope that building a bridge between the digital divide amongst educators in the global world. This will bring about positive change.

The weakness would be mainly in the accuracy of provision of the revenue in the future. The venture team does not have experience in business management, and the financial management would be the most difficult task for us.

REVIEW: Bravo Yuki, for an excellent elevator pitch. I hopped that you will continue the venture pitch in the same manner, but you missed the narration that gives the dynamics and energy to the pitch. Investors like to hear the pitcher real voice to get a sense of passion and energy of the venture presented. Anyway the pitch covers the most important aspects of your venture, though your problem statement is little bit exaggerated. If the problem of faculty handling tablets and mobile devices was huge a few years ago, that problem diminishes year by year, so you may be losing you markets accordingly. Your statement of faculty members in institutions is right, but you should not readily infer that they all have problem with mobile technology skills. That percentage is constantly dropping due to in house training initiatives, as the institutions require those essential mobile tech skills for teaching with the technology, a must in 21st century. Also, you missed the opportunity to scan the competition more thoroughly, mentioning just two players, but there are hundreds of well established companies from local to regional, state and on the world level that do exactly what you would like to, so it may be your barrier to entry into their markets. Your ask is a little bit too high, $500K seed would work. You could have project your development in few phases and ask more altogether, and definitely state how the proceedings will be used, and the returns. That is crucially important for investors. If those questions are not addressed, they may assume that you and your team do not care about the business development, but just about your salaries and profits. Anyway, the venture is good, fix it as suggested and you will impress the investors and take off with the seed money. I hope that this review is going to be quite useful to you. Regards, Milorad.

Review: Yuki as mentioned by the other evaluators your both elevator and venture pitch are excellent. I really like that you effectively used the powtoon with your voice over and graphics in a narrative style. Your analytic arguments were factual, concise, and confidently expressed. My only concern is the amount which you are asking from an investor is too high with little information provided about the return. This needed to be thought further in detail. Other than that, an appealing presentation.

REVIEW: Both pitches very clearly define the pain point: that educators need inexpensive and specific training in educational technology. You do a great job at covering all your bases by stating the value, summarizing the market, drawing attention to competitors, and defining a market strategy. Although the technological medium chosen for the venture pitch is not very engaging, you provide holistic information that sketches a comprehensive picture of the venture in a well-organized fashion. However, I am not convinced I should invest. As leahbio mentioned, investors should really know how the $800,000 that your venture needs will be spent. This is crucial because it highlights specific, market-driven challenges that you need to convince me that your venture can overcome. I am glad that you acknowledge your competition. However, you offer little insight into how your solution is better than others so I cannot confidently evaluate the uniqueness of your venture.

REVIEW: Yuki, really enjoyed the story telling you used in your elevator pitch then you surfaced embedded in the video! Nice addition to have yourself there and not use powtoon entirely for your pitch presentation. It draws the investor in to want to know more especially since you brought a real-world contextual example. I like the name you chose, fitting for your venture and the fact that it caters to a multilingual higher education market. Your venture pitch was also visually aesthetically pleasing and a bit interactive (tabs). Well done. I would add audio or video to this part of your presentation to cater to more learners or investors who are not entirely visual. I wonder about your marketability for higher-education, are you catering to specific fields? Universities? or professions? More details or specifics of this especially during your phases would be beneficial. What gives BridgET a competitive advantage? You mentioned three in your elevator pitch, more examples of how or which digital skills you are catering to would be of an investor's interest. Also going into more depth about your company team and creditials will lend more credibility to your pitch. I would invest in BridgET. Professionally done!

FEEDBACK: The elevator presentation was well done and caught my attention as it used multiple voices and good use of animation. I think it would be good to go into more detail regarding what the return to the investor will be? What are the revenue streams that your company will generate? What are you forecasting? This would be a good compliment to a good presentation.

REVIEW: Like James, I like the way you started your elevator pitch. It's interesting and quite refreshing. I also like how your pitch is set against a campus background, rather than just a blank wall. It makes your pitch setting authentic. Plus you're not staring straight into the camera, so it seems more natural. Elevator pitch aside, I also like how you have outlined your market strategy model to include membership, sponsorship and so on. My suggestions for improvement would be to end your pitch less abruptly and to remove the transition effect. Great work!

Review Hi Yuki, I loved the way that you started your elevator pitch. A short narrative can really grab the audience's attention. I felt emotionally invested and connected by the end of your elevator pitch. I liked how you broke down the stages of development/involvement. The beginning stage was free which I liked because most people will look for that type of information on free services anyway. I use youtube to learn how to do all sorts of things from taking screen shots on my android device to rebuilding a carburetor on my motorcycle. I think your plan to have the more elaborate services be subscription based. For example paid users can be part of a collaborative community. What I am worried about is that your venture will not be much different from the competitors that you discussed. For your next iteration I would elaborate on how your service will be better than the competition. As an educator and possible user of this service, I would request that the analytic be removed or changed. I don't like the idea of my institution or supervisor evaluating me based on my proficiency with your service. The analytic could be helpful, but it will be met with resistance, especially in Canada where most educators belong to unions and contract language that prevent this type of evaluation. I would be interested in investing in something like this if these few issues were worked out. Especially, as you pointed out in your venture pitch, there is a growing need for IT training in schools and universities. James.

FEEDBACK: I’m a sucker for accents and was hooked by the speaker at the beginning of the video. Also, your real-world example made me curious and immediately intrigued. You provide us with some important information in your elevator pitch. However, I am just wondering what amount you’re asking from investors and what you’re exactly going to use the money for (I know it's a lot squeeze into a 1 minute pitch). PS: I really liked the background music.

FEEDBACK - I'm not sure the best way to give feedback for venture pitches so I think I will go with a two stars and a wish style approach. 2 stars – I really like the name of your venture it is clever and easy to remember. In your elevator pitch the introductory story was really effective. It set the tone that your venture is solving a real problem. My one wish would be to give a little bit more info on why someone would choose BrigET over trying to go with information/resources that are freely available online.
