Self-Reflection:
Having taught in a school that could not facilitate the amount of students, I know too well the need for online courses to be available to schools. The solution that was decided upon (in our schools case) was to have a staggered start, in which half the school would begin an hour before the second batch of students arrived at school. Needless to say, this led to scheduling nightmares for administration and teachers alike. Had our school had a viable option for online learning, I doubt they would have ignored it. The idea of the “Digital Migrators” also emerged from another experience I had teaching in the Vancouver school District. My first year teaching in the VSB, was coincidentally the first year that they implemented district closure days, in addition to adding another 5 days to Spring Break. The rationale behind the district closures was that it would allow for reprieve in the budgeting of the district. I believe by having some of the secondary schools in Vancouver adopt blended models of education, in which on some days they attend classes in school and other days online, the school board could continue to save money. As a result of the cost savings experienced by secondary schools, the school board could allocate funds to elementary schools, which would put less pressure on parents due to the high cost of childcare.
Through this project I was able to get a small glimpse of what entrepreneurs must go through on a regular basis, and it made me appreciate the difficulty that comes with the profession. The prospect of having to create a new company and product from scratch was at first daunting, however as I gave it more thought, it became less and less intimidating. One of the difficulties I found with this assignment was how it was drastically different from all the assignments I have done in my post-secondary education thus far. Having only completed 2 courses in the MET program so far, this type of assignment was new to me, however I anticipate there will be more assignments of this genre moving forward. Through the completion of both assignments 1 and now 3, I believe I have learned how to be more succinct in my communication methods. As I worked on this project, I watched a number of elevator and sales pitches and found that the most compelling pitches were those that were brief and to the point. It was with this in mind that I created my pitch.
