Venture Pitch for Trello LMS Plug-in

By syousuf on August 4, 2014

Hi everyone,

Here is my elevator pitch:

Shadia Yousuf Assignment 3 Elevator Pitch

Here is my venture pitch.

Shadia Yousuf Assignment 3 Venture Pitch

My Reflection:

After I finished writing my Venture Pitch I realized that the ask for my product may be too high. When I think of the show Dragon’s Den, I typically see investments of somewhere between $100 000 – $500 000. In my venture pitch I have asked for a $10 million investment. This is because the company I fictionally say I am apart of already exists – Trello. They continue to get venture capital investments and according to TedCrunch, the last round of funding was for $10 million. To be in line with the last amount, I also request $10 million in my venture pitch to take Trello’s existing product into a completely new direction.  However, when I reflect on this assignment I think that most new start-ups would initially ask for a much lower investment amount. I think Trello’s experience is different because one of the founder’s is already established in the tech industry, and so with his established credibility and success in the field its easy for him to get VC funding.  I am not sure if this would be the case for the majority of startups.

Thank you,

Shadia

Great pitch, great product, great ideas/additions. Your use of PowToon is fantastic and your visuals are appealing and your voice over perfectly matches the slides. Your voice is convincing and your product sounds useful. Your document is content rich and shows your hard work. I would have loved to seen it presented with a different medium as it is hard to hear your enthusiasm and belief in the product through a document. A Prezi or slideshow would have added so much more to your content, as it is clear you invested a lot of time and research. I like your opening picture representing Trello, very creative! Well done!

Feedback: Shadia, really enjoyed your elevator pitch! Certainly a very important tool all students and educators could benefit from. The use of your voice and tone is intriguing and wants an investor to learn more. You mentioned how Trello would be great but what is your competitive edge from an investor perspective, revenue model for an investor to extend Trello's capabilities. Wonderfully done!

Feedback: I am impressed with your effective and efficient use of powtoons in your elevator pitch. It seems to be the best one so far. Your venture details are clearly stated in your pdf document. In explaining the problem and its solution you should have focused more in providing details and decision centric analysis to a prospective investor. Overall it was a great work.

FEEDBACK: My first impression is, I like your voice! Very much, I should add. Your 5-year projection of the market, backed by solid statistics, is great. However, I find your presentation is somewhat text-heavy and ends quite abruptly. But it is excellent overall.

Feedback: You had a good elevator pitch that used the tool (PowToon) effectively and to full advantage. You covered all the information I need to know as an EVA. I use Trello (free version) so I was intrigued by your take on the product and how to improve it. One suggestion I have is your pitch is slightly directed at the end user..."Have you ever had to..." The problem and solution was clear but more to me as the user than an investor. A slight tweak to the audience would help. Maybe something along the lines of “We've heard from our existing 4 million customers. They are frustrated with other online tools, they love Trello and want it to do more. With our last round of funding we made crazy improvements that our customers are thrilled with - and they're telling their friends. With your investment we can accelerate and make Trello the go-to tool for online learning in higher ed and business" I read through your venture pitch. It was very impressive. I like that you included the financial model. Right now Trello is a freemium model and some companies using this method to gain customers are struggling to create paying customers so including this was a smart idea. Well done!

Feedback: I enjoyed this presentation as it had an financial plan included that showed expenses and projected revenue. As an investor, this information is probably the first think to look at. You have outlined effectively how this project will improve the situation for users. I am actually glad you asked for 10 million as its always better to ask for more than less. A smaller number may lead the the investor question: will the project actually be completed? Well done!

REVIEW - Hi Shadia, Of all the elevator pitches I was asked to review, I thought yours was the best, as you had a strong presentation and you covered most of the elements I would be looking for as an EVA. Going through your Venture Pitch, I also though you covered all your bases well, and that their is a potential untapped market for your plugin in higher education. However, I was with you until I got to your “Ask and Return”. Unless it was a typo (a very crucial typo), I don’t believe any investor would contribute to a $10 million investment just to break even in about 4 years. So unfortunately, I cannot recommend funding until you are able to produce this technology at a cheaper cost to the investor. On a side note, it was great to work with you this semester.

Review. I loved you elevator pitch. It was visually striking and you spoke clearly and articulately. Your elevator pitch clearly explained your proposed new direction for Trello. I think that you were on to something when you chose to work with an already successful company. I think you are right when you say it will be easier to get VC funding when you are working with experienced and successful people. I loved your elevator pitch so much that I would have like to see your venture pitch with some audio and slide shows. You are a great public speaker: calm, clear, concise and well informed. You can capitalize on that in your venture pitch. When I try to put myself in the shoes of an investor, I am concerned that this is a lot of money for something that people can already get for little or no cost. I would spend a little more time giving some specific examples or details about how people get frustrated by spending too much time learning how to use the tools that are supposed to make life easier. I love stories and I would be captivated by a one minute narrative at the beginning of your venture pitch about how the current situation is not working. Great work, James.

FEEDBACK – As an online student I really like this idea, it can definitely be a pain to try and coordinate all of the elements in a group project. I have used Trello in the past and found it intuitive and helpful. You did a great job of presenting a convincing pain point. I would suggest giving a little bit more info on how Trello will outperform any improvements made by the LMS in terms of collaboration/organization spaces. Nicely done!

FEEDBACK Strengths: Your elevator pitch is intriguing, as you drew me in with your practical references. I also appreciated knowing how successful the business is. I think this venture can be very useful to people working in groups (especially in our MET program!). The five-year growth projection in your proposal really paints a picture on the direction your venture is going to be taking—nice touch! Weaknesses: I was hoping that you would have discussed the competition a bit more in your proposal. Overall, you did a great job!
