Week 12 Review

By leahbio on August 7, 2014

Hi Group 12,

Fantastic job work done on Wearables for the week.  I especially loved your Powtoon introductory video, other videos and information on your OER (presented well given the scope of Wearable technology).  Working collaboratively in the Google forum was another great way to have all of us interact together, I liked the ability of being able to share thoughts on other classmates posts as well.  I learned a great deal about Wearable technology and its trends .

I love that new and innovative wearable technology has the ability to connect with the users surroundings and communicates information.  As a class, we had some amazing new venture ideas from this area alone!  It was great fun seeing others creations and making our own.  I also liked how to you tied our activities to our venture assignment, great practice!   A small suggestion for your site, being slightly colourblind, I found some of the material a bit visually overwhelming, a lot of great information but a lot at once.  I enjoyed your OER and learning about Wearable technology, thank you for such an interesting topic and activities!

Interesting website/article about Wearable technology:

Something I found of great interest that might interest our class and your group is from the Erogear website.  This new technology that LG, Sony, and Samsung are creating LED displays that wrap around furniture and other surfaces. This is similar to the wearable technology you mentioned in your OER but it extends far beyond mobile devices, integration into our clothing.

www.erogear.com

Eurogear

Their technology “Fos extends our mobile devices to visually inform the world around us. Low Energy Bluetooth connectivity streams text, images, video, and feeds from social media. Fos alerts of incoming calls and SMS delivering a new and transparent era of connectedness.”

I think this technology has the potential to make Smartphones and tablets eventually obsolete if it continues to grow and evolves in use.

Another article you may find interesting is that a UK stats company estimates that Mobile Smart Wearable Devices will be a 130 Million market by 2018! (this includes glasses and watch technology) with some social and legal barriers.  Incredible.  So classmates who created such amazing wearable ventures, should market their wearables soon! 😉

@Kendra, really enjoyed your weeks activities Kendra! Wow, visual learning. Can you share how you got into that profession or how you specialized in that area? Thank you for your comments regarding my suggestion. Good to know you had links to plain text as well. To be specific, I guess I found the initial photo on your page a bit visually overwhelming as it took over much of the home page as your scrolled down. Visually its a beautiful pic but initially it took up a lot of space, I see that you might have adjusted that now. That's just a personal preference though, as for the first time I visited your site. Also on the pages think like an investor page and think like an educator page, you have a beautiful infographic with the steps for what to do in the activities, just found that infographic a bit visually overstimulating. I don't see red very well so anything with red overwhelms me and I need a break, but again just personal preference. I noticed that you already changed the fonts and formatting of much of your site, as it was a lot larger before and spaced closer together, crowded. It is now a lot easier to read and go through. I loved the use of your graphics throughout, you stimulated audio, and visual which was great! Haha, Kendra I doubt your OER will be obsolete! but wearable technology is certainly growing and on the up and up! Amazing how that technology is growing so rapidly. I wonder if anyone will be able to keep up! Your group did a wonderful job with your OER. Thank you.

Hi Leah, Thank you for your review. It is much appreciated. I agree with you regarding our site. My background is in visual learning and accessible learning. I do think our site is somewhat over busy and the instructions for the three activities are difficult for some to read with background image. Since these were jpegs it made them inaccessible to screen readers so I included a link to plain text as well. One question since I try to make my websites accessible what in particular was difficult and how could we fix it? Thank you too for the links, in some ways I think our OER will be obsolete in 6 months :) Kendra
