BrainPOP

By Lindsay on September 23, 2014

BrainPOP is an online educational resource in the form of a website that provides animated videos on a variety of course content for different subjects. It targets Kindergarten to grade 8 students and is available in English and Spanish. This website also supports English as a Second Language learners and hosts a portal for educational games called GameUp. In addition to providing lessons and games, this website supports quizzes to test students on the materials presented. Teachers can employ this website in the traditional classroom setting or to support a flipped classroom.

Week 4 - Participation Picture

Avraham Kadar, M.D., is the creator and current leader of BrainPOP. He is a doctor, who specializes in pediatrics and immunology, and who holds the title of Founder for this website. He initially developed this website to convey medical information to children in his care. The website is now also supported by a significant team of individuals with expertise in a variety of subject areas, including education and writing. They coordinate with a variety of individuals, as well, in order to ensure success of the website, such as instructors, parents and Academic Advisors. In addition to these people who assist with content, there are a variety of individuals who assist with animation, gaming and technology. These include full-time animators, as well as partner companies and software developers. The biographies for these individuals demonstrate that they are particularly competent in their fields of expertise, with relevant education and work experience.

Through reading about the entrepreneurs, I have realized that it is not only essential to begin a venture with a specific, feasible and advantageous plan, but to enlist the assistance of qualified individuals who can help develop the plan and ensure its success. It is, therefore, essential to develop and ensure a vast professional network with intelligent individuals form a variety of fields and with different skills and abilities. Additionally, I believe an effective entrepreneur, such as the developer of BrainPOP, needs to be able to convince those individuals to join and assist with the venture. That capability is also essential for ensuring the company is well-staffed.

I think its interesting that this and some of the other submissions are by people that don't necessarily comply with the hard-nosed entrepreneurial stereotype. I don't believe this founder has any kind of exit strategy in mind except possibly when he retires.

Kadar has created a terrific teaching tool for his pediatric patients. The fact that it continues to expand and develop suggests that this was a welcome innovation by the good Doctor. While I would like to know more of Kadar's biography and personal profile, I do get the sense just from his picture that he has a genuine interest in this venture. And, as evidenced from his ability to garner support, enlisting the assistance of qualified individuals to help develop the plan and ensure its success is an essential formula for success.

The BrainPOP concept is a great one – using animation and likable characters to make information accessible to kids. The founder, Dr. Kadar, appears to have parlayed his career as a physician into a successful technology concept. His company has also used their knowledge of education and grant funding to provide an avenue for educator to access the pay services of his company. The funding page on the site provides ideas for educators to apply for grants, or for donors to provide funding to access services – a very savvy way to increase his subscriber base. I was a bit disappointed in his asthma video in “free stuff”. The introduction was very kid friendly, but it quickly moved to a university level of language when the condition was described. Although his advisor list does include a reading advisor, the group could do a better job of targeting the reading level of their materials.
