Hello from San Mateo, CA… but sometimes Langley, BC

By Victoria on September 8, 2015

Hi everyone,

My name is Victoria Olson and I am a Grade 3/4 & Technology Teacher at West Langley Elementary in Langley, BC… most of the time. I am taking a year of personal leave this school year in order to complete my work in the UBC MET program. In the meantime, I am living in San Mateo, CA, USA, where my fiancé teaches!

For anyone who is a part of the educational technology world, San Mateo is a pretty fun place to be. It’s about 30 minutes south of San Francisco at the edge of the Silicon Valley, amidst many exciting startups and innovative educational ventures. (I like to call it Edtech Hollywood.) But it is through being here that I have the opportunity to add another  element of depth to my personal research in ETEC 522; I can more easily communicate  (in person!) with the companies that inspire my project work, in whatever form that may take.

San Mateo in the San Francisco Bay

I enrolled in ETEC 522 because I wanted to know more about the entrepreneurial world and its relation to the educational market. Education in and of itself is (traditionally) such an altruistic and noble field, in that one doesn’t enter it to make financial gains. However, I’m looking at it from the lens of designing useful learning tools to further pique student curiosity or enhance their productivity while learning.

I am looking forward to being a part of this semester’s cohort! If you want to connect with me further, please link to my social media accounts through my blog, techteacheronamission.com.

Cheers,

Victoria
