The Venture:

The Civic Mirror is a web-based education program where middle school and high school students actively engage in a simulation based on government, law and economics. In the program, students create their own country and essentially become the citizens of the country. Through the simulation, students learn about the rights and responsibilities of citizens, electoral processes, the political spectrum, the economy and justice system. The game is available in both Canadian and American versions and each version is supplemented with a plethora of quality resources and lesson plans. The program allows educators to participate in a free 6 week trial of the program.

As the former teacher of an inner city school, Regan Ross felt it was necessary to devise a way to engage his students in the social studies curriculum. He wanted students to be excited to come to class. Before creating The Civic Mirror, Ross created a non-digital form of the game. The program was a complete success. Attendance, engagement and interest in the social studies curriculum increased drastically. However, the preparation time for the game became an arduous task. He decided to develop the game so other educators could have access to the tools and resources he had employed in the classroom.

Bio:

Regan Ross’ experience as a high school educator contributed to his success in creating The Civic Mirror. Due to his background knowledge with the social studies curriculum and desire to engage his students, Ross had the skills and motivation necessary to build a successful program. In order to be successful, a educational learning program should be supported and created by educators. The Civic Mirror was developed under Action-Ed Learning Resources Ltd which is a company created by teachers that focuses on education. Additionally, Regan Ross’ achievement has been celebrated by being awarded a variety of awards after creating and founding  The Civic Mirror. In 2008, Ross was recognised by the Prime Minister of Canada for excellence in teaching. The following year, The British Columbia Social Studies Teacher’s Association awarded Ross with the “Innovator of the Year Award”.

Regan Ross has created a valuable learning experience in The Civic Mirror, where students learn through an immersive and embodied and manner. He is a visionary, who recognized the need to connect abstract concepts of government, the economy and the judicial system through an extended series of connected activities that generates impressive authenticity among student participants. I have used The Civic Mirror in my grade 10 classes for the past 3 years, and I can speak to its effectiveness and reliability as a learning tool. Equally impressive is Regan Ross. I have got to know him since my trial run in 2013, where he enthusiastically responded to my emails, discussion posts and even phone calls to ensure that I had a successful experience with the platform even though the program is well documented with tutorial resources. He is a committed Constructivist who is well-read in progressive pedagogies who shares his passion with colleagues and students alike. The success of his simulation in both Canada and the United States is testimony to this.

I like the idea of this product, it's creator, and also the reflections included above and below. The product sounds a bit like Model UN 2.0, but focusing on a domestic level. I like that it was developed by a teacher with the support of a teacher-led company. This speaks to a functional process of creation within a supportive, dynamic community. Regan Ross is definitely an example of an entrepreneur we can learn from.

Thanks for your post, Brittany. I think one of the marketable qualities of this venture is that it applies educational technology not only to a specific purpose, field of study, or class, but to a specific lesson within the class. Because ed. tech. products can often be used in so many different ways and for so many things, I think that teachers and users sometimes often feel overwhelmed when deciding what product to use or how to use it. The Civic Mirror is a niche product with which to teach a particular subject, and that specialization must have some appeal for much of the education market. It also allows potential investors to easily understand it.
