Nic Borg – Edmodo

Nic_Borg_Edmodo

Co-founder of Edmodo, Nic Borg launched the initial settings of Edmodo in 2008. Edmodo is an online platform designed to “bridge the gap between how students live their lives and how they learn in schools” (How students learn is just as important as what). Clearly identifying the pain problem that the limitations presented through privacy of student information in school systems is ultimately halting progressive growth of the classroom learning to parallel out-of-school interactions. With the mission to launch a teacher-friendly site with a student-focused interface adhering to many district privacy policies, Edmodo is the number one social learning network. Emulating an environment of growth and comfort for twenty-first century learners, Edmodo is a unique platform that supports many of educations advancements such as flipped classrooms allowing for more individualized learning and one-to-one instruction. Specifically designed to support K – 12 classrooms, Edmodo works closely with teaching professionals through collaboration and suggestions in order to improve the site to meet teachers’ needs.

Nic Borg is the Co-Founder and current Chief Productions Officer at Edmodo. Starting to work in the technology department in high school and all the way through college until ready to enter the work force makes Borg particularly qualified to design and support teachers’ classroom and curricular needs. With the primary task of building online tools and looking for solutions for learning management, Borg implements much of his learning from this role to the design of Edmodo – focus on teacher needs, classroom needs and collaboration. His motivation stems from creating a passion for emerging technology, respect for teachers and attempting to make learning more accessible and current for students. In collaboration with Jeff O’Hara, Borg seems to have successfully identified many of the current issues with moving forward to more online learning. The platform that he and his co-founder have created addresses issues of cost, privacy and accessibility of resources for teachers. The board of directors is composed of poised individuals in the field of education and business. Their skills speak to a large range of current issues in the creation of technology software as well as challenges in teaching.

As a potential entrepreneur in the field of education, I felt that Edmodo was an excellent example of ways to address current issues in education by bridging the gap between teaching and business. Edmodo is a positive example to how to stay true to their mission of facilitating the role of the teacher and making learning mimic more closely the platforms students are comfortable with online. Their ability to stay true to teachers concerns and needs help them to be the forerunners in the world of education technology tools.

Thanks for your comments! I have yet to implement it into my class (dealing with a few issues with my district only allowing us to use servers in Canada - but seeing as someone down the hall is using google classrooms I think it's just a matter of time) but through this research and assignment one, I hope to be well prepared to use it in my classroom. Great to hear that you've had success with it! Teaching grade 7 (oldest in the school), I think it will be particularly useful to engage the students in an online platform.

I have used Edmodo for a few years with great success. I appreciate the intuitive Facebook style user interface, as my students feel quite familiar with it. I was able to post work and all handouts and notices, as well as parent access. I found that my students had little excuses not to get their work done at home! I also like the mobile app, which allowed me to respond to any class questions that students posted at all times.
