OSHA Using Game Based Training

By Kate L. on October 29, 2015

Click on the OSHA link, a branch of the US Government Department of Labor, and you will see that they too are using gaming for safety training. As you can see by the instructions page, they also include the healthcare industry.  The game is designer for both the workers and the business owners and have incorporated cost savings and repercussions into the activity.  This looks like an exciting opportunity in EdTech for those that are fans of gamification in learning.  Spending much of my life in academia, it is enlightening to see realize the level of corporate training going on, and especially in the health and safety sector.  A whole new world of opportunities.  https://www.osha.gov/dte/edcenters/index.html

In reviewing the Ladder Challenge, I was initially drawn to the concept. Seemed like it would be a fun challenge, but immediately I hit the learning curve, or lack there of. It was set up as a game but without prior teaching of which were the important steps to follow on the jobsite in respect to ladder work, it was hit and miss. It claims to “let you learn by doing” but for me there was not enough learning happening. This highlights the need for choice, some younger workers may like to learn in this type of game format, but it would not work for everyone.
