Week 8 Activity 1 – Central Okanagan School District

By lanehardy on October 29, 2015

The school district that I work for, SD23 (Central Okanagan), uses online technology to deliver their safety courses.

The courses that are offered are actually more numerous than I originally thought. The safety courses are all delivered through videos, and they are hosted on their own domain website. Each course is designed so that users can work at their own pace – to do this, they have chunked all the information so that the viewer is not overwhelmed. The courses are also not only for teachers but for CUPE employees as well- for example, they even have Asbestos training.

Some of the courses that are included are the new WHMIS training, Bullying and Harassment, Preventing Violence, and Health and Safety Committee training.

The courses are tracked, so that users cannot skip ahead. There is usually a small quiz and a certificate can be printed off at the end.

To be honest, it might not be the most engaging method (online videos), but given geographical size of our district, it does help with logistics (i.e. I don’t have to drive to the board office through traffic in another city or vice versa).
