Safer Ocean Systems (“SOS”) is one of several providers of Transport Canada approved marine safety and maritime operations courses on Vancouver Island. Their courses are all provided face-to-face, which is mandated by Transport Canada at this point—it avoids the problem of someone “sharing their password” to have someone else do the work. Most of their training is highly practical and hands on, in some cases involving live fire drills and in-water training. The only sign of technology I could find (beyond videos in class) was for more advanced navigation courses. These involved computer simulation of radar, engine controls, electronic charts, and GPS. Computer simulations would provide access to a wide variety of situations that might not occur in any given session out on the water, and also obviates the necessity of access to a large, expensive boat.
