Cervus Equipment in Edmonton is an industrial equipment dealer and a provider of vocational safety training primarily for the construction and oil field industries. They feature a number of different certificate courses including: forklift training, heavy equipment operation, fall protection and lifting/rigging. Given the nature of the training is primarily for hands-on applications the use of technology is fairly basic. They use PowerPoints in their training as well as a number of videos to more clearly communicate certain points. One reason for this limited use of technology is because of the practical element at the end of the training; in which the trainees go hands on with the given equipment and demonstrate their competence.
I decided to focus on Cervus because they target an interesting area of work safety. Many employers and contractors throughout western Canada will let their employees operate machinery without the proper certification or equipment. It hits a bit of a ‘gray zone’ where many medium-small sized businesses don’t demand the same stringent safety guidelines as larger companies.
Cervus provides important, possibly lifesaving vocational training yet are only currently doing that in-person. I feel they could be providing more information online so that workers could come into their classes more prepared and knowledgeable, instead of often starting at square one.
