WHMIS

By Sandy M on November 1, 2015

The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) is Canada’s national hazard communication standard. The key elements of the system are hazard classification, cautionary labelling of containers, the provision of (material) safety data sheets ((M)SDSs) and worker education and training programs.

Our local training program in the past was done in a large group setting, off any job site with a WHMIS  trainer. Paper booklets and training videos were implemented in a face to face group training session. This process was necessary but inefficient. Now, with increased use of technology, we train by using the website imbedded audio and visual tools  and then have the exam on line. This causes far less loss of production as workers can be trained immediately as they come into the new jobsite and be back on the job immediately.

Sandy, I agree it is very useful for WHMIS to be offered online, in our community we have a high flow of workers coming in (especially now that oil is low and people are losing jobs). If we had to wait a week for the next training, it could be very cumbersome and would include a lot of down time for employees.
