One area that seems to be underrepresented, both in the programs our cohort analyzed and in edutech as a whole, is built-in assessment and evaluation. However, I think this gap is currently being addressed, particularly as game-based learning continues to gain traction. As gamification typically consists of benchmarks that need to be reached or goals to be achieved, these markers act as tools for assessment and evaluation. However, with a subject such as writing, game-based learning may not be as easily applicable as within a math or science-based app or program. I feel as though apps and programs that consist of built-in analytics and allow teachers access to this data, serve not only as a strong assessment tool, but help teachers to identify areas requiring further attention. Writing apps consisting of built-in assessment tools not only guide learners, but also provide teachers with insight into the progress of their students.
