Project TimeTravel

By dave shannon on November 28, 2015

Project TimeTravel is an VR app designed for users of the Oculus Rift. The purpose of the app is to transport players back in time and experience certain experiences in history and literature. The players are required to spend a certain amount of time in the virtual arena before they are transported back to the current day. This is a real app and has real developers and is available for download on the Oculus website.

Hi everyone, thanks for your reviews. I agree with most of your comments. I wish I could go back and add a couple things to my Venture project. As far as the "on hiatus" part of it, I think that an app developer would be able to buy this from the creators at a bargain since they seemed to move on from this. It still could be a profitable venture from an investor standpoint but maybe not for the casual investor. There is a lot of risk with this unless you have the bank to cover a potential loss or have a development team up and running.

FEEDBACK: Hi David, your idea was fun an exciting. I enjoyed the videos and the concept of immersion in history is a great one. Your own personal Tardis I guess. Like everyone, I was worried about the "on hiatus" part. If this project is really looking for investors it would need to show some progress, I think. I would at least want to know that there was a developer ready to go ahead and that there was a plan mapped out.

Hi David, I liked your idea and I am very excited to see new ideas for teaching solid subjects like history and literature. As what Tina mentioned, your team must be stronger to catch investors. You said that the venture is a teacher's idea with the work of some volunteers. Such venture needs huge production house, several graphic designers, producers, educators. I also didn't know how to invest and what is the return? In the last part of your ventures video, I couldn't hear your voice, the background music sound was really louder. I think your pitch is a perfect solution for 21st generation but it needs more efforts to be a feasible investing project.

To echo my colleagues, this app looks pretty exciting and educationally relevant. I admire the use of actual game play in your pitch and wish that I could have provided a better example of a prototype for my own product. From the perspective of an investor; however, I was hoping for more specific stats rather than general statements like “big return” and “invest heavily”. What would be your recommendations in terms of a revenue model? funding rounds? development timelines etc? How could you convince investors that another “hiatus” will not happen? Overall, I love the concept and your presentation techniques, but felt that the focus was too much on the amazing product and not enough on the business of it.

Hi Dave, It is interesting that you chose to pitch a product that already exists. I like the idea of you championing this cause and trying to breathe new life into this project. The problem is that I do not even know how to invest. It may have been better to do this as a sales pitch or as an interested buyer looking for support to carry on where the last development team left off; so that a new venture can capitalize on the foundation the team has developed and the original investors can receive some benefit for their efforts. There is really no plan here, and although there may not be apps for the Oculus, there are likely indirect competitors (like desktop or mobile apps) that serve the same market. Good idea, but the business was not defined in a way that makes it a viable investment opportunity.

Feedback: Your elevator pitch really grabbed my interest, despite my lack of general knowledge surrounding game based learning markets. I liked the sense of urgency you created for investors, as you put a lot of focus on how rapidly and vastly this market is expected to grow. With regards to your venture pitch, I definitely related to your point that you might've learned a lot more in history classes had they incorporated a program such as this. I think you would get a similar reaction out of many investors, as we can all agree that the often implemented textbook-focused approach to history education is far from engaging. I think you have a great product here, and the manner in which you chose to pitch it is highly creative and relevant!

REVIEW: As a big fan of gamified learning in the classroom, this really appealed to me. I felt that your elevator pitch was clear and the scope of the project really came through. I can tell why it has fallen apart. In the game play, I was impressed by the amount of interactive objects and 3D details the game had… but the scope of it seems very unreasonable for a start up! I think a more basic game getting built first and then update it as you have time would be more prudent. I do have an initial concern over how realistic it would be for students to get their hands on Oculus Rift frequent enough to use this for meaningful learning. After watching your venture video, other than getting the project up and running again, I'm not sure what you are asking for. I would like to invest, but what is the plan? How much do you need? You need a full-time team, but what is that going to cost a year? So, as a waiting investor, I still have lots of questions!

Hi Tina and Tariq, Thanks for your feedback. The "on hiatus" part through me too as when I first choose this product I was really excited about it. I had started research and creating the videos when I heard back from one of the developers at the last minute. I agree that the on hiatus part would scare off a lot of people. However, I was thinking over the last couple of days that a potential investor could buy the app outright from the creator and further develop the product. I feel that Project TimeTravel has great "bones" that could be built upon. I never heard back from the developer about whether he was interested in selling his unfinished project to a more experienced game/app developer. The game/app developer would be the target market for this product at this time, where the educational industry would the target market for the future developed version.

FEEDBACK: Your Elevator Pitch and the first half of the Venture Pitch certainly are captivating and I find myself excited about the potential of this product in the classroom. However, where it fell flat was when you were asking for investors but admitted to not having any developers. I am not certain if admitting this to potential investors is the best choice as it makes the investment much more risky. On one hand you are being honest. On the other hand, you need to convince the investors that you are ready to proceed. How much capital are you requesting? This is not clear in the presentation. However, overall, the product itself looks very promising.
