A3- VIVIDWORKS app

By kdurny on November 30, 2015

This fictitious creation, is an app that would augment a child’s world using printed vocabulary layer over the objects around them. The idea came primarily from the second language classroom, which always labels furniture, posters, items, with the second language text. Taking that for learners who have verbal knowledge of these words and then having a way to digitally demonstrate these words, with an audio reading as well to confirm the word shown is the word desired.

Reflecting on the experience. I still struggle with thinking with the ‘inventor’ hat on. As an educator I naturally want to promote a product for its learning features, rather than the revenue benefit. I find it extremely challenging to fit in all the key points to a short pitch video. Even with the help of visuals, its pretty quick. I am also not a great fan of myself as an actor. I learned from this project, my son is not either. Thankfully he, under duress agreed to assist me. I am used to the work of a teacher speaking for itself and this felt a bit like a resume building exercise. It was wonderful to see the process from several different views over the course and attempt to provide a product from each perspective. The more we began to learn about one, the more relevant it become to the others. I attempted to imbed infographics and work on the ‘professional’ feel of the document in addition to content. Telling a compelling story in less rather than more words. Keep engagement higher. Value the investors time. Get to the point quickly.

Anyway, here is the youtube link for my elevator pitch: http://www.vididworks.com/

And here is the document:

Review: I really like your Venture Pitch. I think you are able to identify a problem and an AR solution that will work both in the classroom and for other environments. It would be perfect to help students learn a second language, and those students who struggle with language acquisition have instant access to the answers they need whereas students who already know the vocabulary aren't having their brain overstimulated with words all around them. I think it could also be used at in home environments with young children learning English. You were very thorough in your research which gives me confidence in your company. I do have some concerns as others have addressed as in the development of your app and if you have the current resources to put your idea into fruition as it seems likes a gigantic task to start up the initial task of the working AR "dictionary" itself. With a further conversation into what lays ahead in the project timeline of your venture I will be more likely to invest.

Feedback: Hi Kim, the idea behind this app would solve some real world problems for a large prospective market. Your PDF document is thorough, informative and well designed. It reflects your company very positively. As a prospective investor I would be motivate to talk further in the hopes of backing your product. The only questions I hope you would answer further would have to do with the nuts & bolts of the app, on a more technical level.

Vividworks is a great idea for language classes and language learners alike. I can see this being used in the travel industry as well, if you were to be featured in a Lonely Planet or Fodor’s books or travel magazines it could be quite profitable. I also think that the more AR is used in the classroom, the better the technology will become and the cheaper the tech will be in the future. I like the different ways that you plan on making revenue and the list of costs. I also appreciate all of the talent and experience that your team has to offer, as it brings credibility to your venture.

Kim, you have a very interesting idea here. I appreciate you taking the use of language text to the next level of augmented text overlay on objects in the classroom. I really liked the line "imagine a world where what they see is also what they read" in your elevator pitch and found it to be very effective is drawing me in to want to learn more. I would have liked to see more pertinent details within your elevator pitch though. Your venture pitch was very thorough and supporting your venture with concrete reading theories added credible value. However, the choice of presentation format as pdf was not engaging for me and I think as an investor I would expect some level of interaction or engagement with the person "behind" the venture. So for instance a narration to add a more personal element to the piece. This does't mean the idea or product isn't worthwhile, only that the presentation (for me anyway...and only my opinion) was a little flat.

Feedback: Kim, I like the concept you've presented here. The ultra modern version of looking it up in the dictionary! It was great to see your actor at the beginning. It was a very effective hook for me. The one problem I see is that there is a limited use to what can be seen. Don't get me wrong I see value, but what if the person wants to write about something that is not in the room, or that they don't have a picture of?

FEEDBACK: Kim, this reminds me a bit of the Google Translate feature (and competing apps) that allows you to point at foreign text and see the instant English translation, and I think this is your strongest market, with additional-language learners. I think young children learn to write differently than this, and that the process of learning to read and write is quite organic and complex and that a tool like this would not add value. I’d refocus and go the direction Laura is suggesting below.

Great App idea, the technology is already available so creating the app using this existing technology makes your App idea definitely workable. Your app is based on sound research and in an area of growth, both in Apps and in AR. I can see many applications for language learning, writing and assisting with communication for students with limited abilities. Google Translate already has the ability to recognize signs and languages and translate using the layer system. My only concern would be item recognition. Items do not always look the same from different perspectives. It will take a long time to upload all the items from different perspectives, angles, sizes, shapes, colours etc. for the app to locate the target image within its directory. Having created a Layar and Aurasma content I know that the target image has to be identifiable, which means sometimes manipulating the item until the camera recognizes it. What was your ASK?I would imagine much of the time and money would be in the creation of the target image database. Overall a good presentation. Apps are definitely a growing trend in the EDU technology world.

Feedback: Hi Kim, great idea. This reminds me of a recent book that my son just had to have about dinosaurs and there was an app that was included in it to bring to life, which was pretty cool I must admit. Anyways I thought your idea has real potential. As you noted in your longer venture document, there currently isn't any "direct app" that revolves around AR and Early English Vocabulary acquisition. As a result you would have an early niche market entrance for this product which allows you to establish market presence first. However as some of the comments have hinted at below there is a much larger market for this product and developers do exist in adjacent market spaces, which means that your early entrance would be cut very short. (ie the publishers of the dinosaur book earlier could implement the same idea relatively quickly because they already have the resources to do it). In your longer pitch you have clearly proven the need and market trend for this product, but would like to hear more about how you intend to differentiate yourself other than the AR + Vocabulary. Perhaps some features that will allow users to also interact back with the text. (ie add notes and snapshots to words in AR, or add your own voice as a footnote). In addition would like to hear more about how investors would see a return or revenue model / strategies. Great job. Ps. Your son was an awesome actor.

FEEDBACK: I love this idea for an application! Want to join our ventures? As a grade 7 French Immersion teacher I often feel conflicted on whether or not to label certain things around the room to facilitate/have less students asking “comment dit-on ____?”. What I particularly like about this is it not only shows what the word is but how to spell it and definitions/linking words. I think that an application like this has an excellent chance of succeeding in the classroom. At least in upper intermediate classrooms students have access to their own personal mobile devices where an application such as this could be downloaded. I think that it would help as it could be used to specifically help support those students who need it, allowing students who do understand to not have those labels everywhere challenging themselves to know what the words are and what they mean.
