Some Thoughts in the Final Week

By jgourley on December 4, 2015

Hi Everyone,

As we’re in the final week I had a couple of thoughts that I thought I would share that may help future versions of the course.

Overall I enjoyed the course a lot.  It was great to have a different spin on things. As someone who doesn’t live in the K-12 world it was nice to see everyone stretching outside of it a little bit.

  1. I’ve been listening to a podcast called “Start Up”. It is about the starting of a company to create podcast.  The first season is really open and honest about the process they went through starting up their company and looking for capital.  I think of a lot of podcasts as education artifacts and this one, although entertaining, is very educational.  I would recommend that anyone taking this course take a listen to it.
  2. I think that the reflection for the last assignment should be moved to the end of the venture forum.  I can only speak for myself of course, but I’m finding the comments and questions extremely valuable.  I’m also appreciating the vulnerability that everyone must feel putting their work out there to be judged by everyone.  It’s an uncomfortable process to be sure. I’m finding this process just as valuable as creating the actual assignment.  Actually similar to what the folks in the “Start Up” podcast found. By moving the reflection part of the exercise to after the week there is an opportunity to reflect on the whole assignment.

Kate, I thought the same thing. I think when I take 590 (like this summer). I'm going to float the idea of incorporating a weekly podcast reflecting on the various courses, but only if others also are interested. I thought it would be an interesting way to wrap up the experience.

#1. - Thanks for the podcasts! Almost makes you think you should develop a small podcast as part of your start up venture where you talk to people and bounce your ideas off others. regarding #2. I also eagerly read the feedback on my Venture since it makes you feel encouraged to go in and actually polish up your project and maybe just try to launch it! Although this is a sandbox environment (real investors are not browsing through these proposals) and therefore they are by nature fiction, I found it was hard to tell at times if some projects were actually already in development or close to putting in front of investors. Almost wish there was a Part Two to this course since there are still many details to actually creating a start up we didn't cover such as how to find partners and collaborators for your team, what business structures do you need in place before you look for investment money (incorporation, trademarks?) @katelenert (Twitter)
