Hello from Vancouver

By Chris Q on May 10, 2016

I am a secondary school teacher, and am currently teaching my 5th year in Vancouver at an all-girls independent school. My current teaching load consists of Biology 12 (soon to be “Anatomy & Physiology 12” in the new BC Curriculum), ICT 9 (NXT Robotics, Photoshop & SketchUp), and Science 8. I have also taught Science 10 and an online-only ICT 8 course, as well as ELL Science 8 classes.

Previously, I taught for 7 years at an Ontario-curriculum “matriculation” (Grade 12 only, Biology & Chemistry) program in Petaling Jaya (near Kuala Lumpur), Malaysia. Before that, I was teaching Science, Math, and Electronics in Porirua, New Zealand, as well as a Catholic all-girls grammar school in North London (UK). Needless to say, I like to travel! I’ve set up an MET blog/e-Portfolio, where I’ve posted some of my travel photos as well as assignments and blog/discussion board posts from my previous MET courses.

I have no business experience (none, zero, nada) so I thought this might be a good way to learn about business as it relates to learning technologies. So far I’m having some difficulties deciphering some of the ‘business jargon’, but hopefully it will become clear as time goes on.

I attended the NCCE (Northwest Council for Computer Education) Conference in Portland last spring and was introduced to a number of new teaching technologies. This was very eye-opening, as much of my teaching experience (prior to coming to Vancouver) was decidedly “low-tech”!

This picture is of me in front of an ornate doorway in Jaipur, India (Amer Fort). I chose it because I feel as if I’m entering unknown terrain – a doorway into the world of ‘venture’ business (I’m not sure if that’s even a term. I’m grasping here).

Hi Chris! Looks like you and I are in the same boat - zero business background! I too feel uneasy about the business jargon; it looks like we both will have to go through a learning curve. I feel slightly better to know that I am not alone. Your e-portfolio is so impressive. I am at awe at your passion for teaching and dedication to writing your thoughts down. Nice to meet you!

Hello again Chris! A colleague of mine also went to the NCCE and said it was an eye opener so I hope to go someday in the future myself! Your experiences in teaching around the world will shed some light on other environments that I never considered myself being settled in my professorship here in Japan. I look forward to collaborating with you throughout this course!

HI Chris, navigate Wow, what amazing teaching experiences you have! Welcome to the class. I think most of us are in the same predicament of not knowing about business or the jargon. I actually run a small business and I don't know the jargon! No worries. While we're on the subject of venting, I am also finding it a little infuriating trying to navigate this webblog platform. I didn't get a link to join until this past Thursday so I'm already behind and trying to catch up. We'll get through if we help each other out. cheers!

Hello Chris, I really liked the metaphor you are proposing with your photo. In these first couple of days in 522 I have been experiencing the same feelings. Do you teach at Little Flower Academy? I teach in Cloverdale at Lord Tweedsmiur Secondary. We are the largest high school in the province.

Hi Chris, Love your metaphorical photo :) Sounds like you have a varied and exciting resume of experience! I see from the courses you've taught you're probably qualified in science and math... How does one teach in the electronics area? I guess what I'm asking is how do you gain those skills? I remember learning the basics of circuits in high school, maybe in grade 9 science? It's something I wish I knew more about! ~ Sarah

That Ontario-curriculum “matriculation” sounds fascinating! I must embarrassingly say that I've never heard of our curriculum being used in other countries. We just started developing our robotics program last year so it would be wonderful to talk to you about that sometime. Cheers, Gordon.
