Jungle Boy Meets Game Geek

By Noan on May 10, 2016

Hello all yonder people on the wrong side of the planet. My name is Noan, and I am hailing (well for the first half of the course at least) from Bali, Indonesia.

I currently teach at a kind of wild school, and have been given way too much freedom for somebody with my level of sanity. As Green Studies Coordinator, I work with students and other teachers and getting in touch with nature, learning from our environment, and thinking of ways to create a more sustainable society. I have integrated to excellent success many game-based units into the curricula, calling them MMCRPGs (the C is for “class”). I do love games, both board and computer, and suspect I am not alone among my school’s population.

this type of guy looks a lot happier after he signs his kids up to our school, and gets daily massages, and learns 3 types of yoga.

The school I work at is very much about entrepreneurial spirit. At the moment, I am heading up a pilot project that is all about thinking of creative solutions to waste, called LEAP (the ‘e’ is for entrepreneurial). We also get a lot of burnt out CEO types bringing their kids here, and as you would have it they are eager to get engaged in new projects and share their pretty spectacular business acumen. So, that can be fun.

Personally, you can find me most often out surfing the waves, enjoying the beach, or climbing the mountains here in Bali. I do less of the latter because I have a young baby (1 year old) and she is addicted to beaches… I think I can live with that 😉

Nice introduction Noan - it sounds like you have a completely different work environment to me and enjoy levels of freedom that I can only dream of! But at the same time if I did have complete freedom to do as I please, things probably wouldn't go as good as they could, so any advice or commentary you can have on directing technology-oriented education would be greatly appreciated! Still hope to go to Bali or Indonesia someday to enjoy the said beaches... My Singaporean better half keeps telling me to go since she finished her teaching contract there a few years back!

Hello Noan, I enjoyed reading your introduction, it seems that you may have experience with blogs or just creative writing in general. I was hooked from the start to finish. Congratulations with your baby, and I know how wonderful Bali can be. On my last visit there I met some locals who had great things to say about teachers at your school, keep it up! Fernando

Hi Noan! It looks like we're in ETEC 522 & ETEC 530 together. You're making me miss my second home.. (my wife is Kadazan, born & raised in Kota Kinabalu Borneo). I'm very interested in the work you're doing there... (do they have any openings for a science teacher? I'm half-serious).

Wow. I think this was the first time I was really inspired to go look up someone's workplace in the MET program. Your job sounds amazing and very unique. Furthermore, as a travel junkie it sounds beyond special to work in a such a beautiful place, particularly when you seem to get to enjoy all the benefits fully! I'm looking forward to hearing more about how you utilize gaming in the classroom. Women and gaming has been of particular interest to me over the past two years, and I actually presented a poster last year on the topic (here: https://stlhe15.sched.org/event/3NWB/poster18-women-and-gamification-disassembling-the-gendered-classroom). Looking forward to getting to know you and your work better.

Noan, that sounds like an amazing place to work and seems very rewarding. I too love implementing game-based learning and would love to hear more about the MMCRPG's you've developed. I previously worked at a daycare that strived to be very nature-first (outdoor naps, entire weeks outside, etc) and loved the experience. Bali seems like a much nicer place to do this than Winnipeg though :) I look forward to working with you!

Welcome Noan! It sounds like we have some overlap between our areas. I too teach outdoor education/skills and our grade 4 science curriculum in Alberta (which I am teaching for the first time....) includes a significant waste management/reduction unit.
