Winnipeg Welcome

By jesse mayer on May 10, 2016

Hi Everyone

My name is Jesse and I live in Winnipeg, 522 is my 7th course in the MET program and starts the last 12-month journey of this program; needless to say I’m very excited. I’ve been eyeing 522 for a while now and finally decided that the time is right. It has always been of interest to me as I work within the private IT field for a company that provides IT services for other companies without their own internal team. Basically, they outsource their IT needs to us. I run two teams of technicians who are directly in the field and serve as a CTO of sorts, to these companies without their own internal resources. It’s a fantastic job that see’s me problem solving IT needs for a wide variety of companies, both for and non-profit. One of my clients, a private school, is undergoing a device refresh for their K-6 portion right now and we’re actively exploring BYOD; it’s provided a great opportunity to pass on a lot of the knowledge I’ve acquired.

Now, part of my interest in this class comes from the HBO show Silicone Valley. It’s a hilarious glimpse into the work of startup tech companies and really expanded my interest in figuring out the actual way startups happen and grow.

I hope to be able to bring an unique offering to this course as I’ve had years of experience in the private field and often work with startup companies trying to get their foot in the door. As an example, the company I work for was one of the first major players to work with SMART and bring their products into the Man-Sask market.

I look forward to working with everyone!

Hi Jesse, Welcome! and thanks for adding a new program to my ever-growing list of things to watch :) I am also not a teacher, and originally from Winnipeg, so a couple of things in common! Looking forward to working with you this semester.

Hi Jesse. Welcome aboard! Congratulations on entering your final year. It seems that your employment provides a great deal of flexibility and challenge. Your current exploration of BYOD is quite fascinating. In fact, I might suggest that BYOD is very interesting particularly in the elementary setting (I teach Grade 1/2). I learned quite a bit about this topic during my last class and I have to admit that it has lots of merit. Given the financial challenges that school districts are facing (along with other non-financial benefits) I can certainly see BYOD continuing to gain momentum. My school/district has taken the opposite approach with investments in school-purchased devices. Over the past 3-4 years we have invested heavily into a variety of tools, including Smart Boards, classroom laptops, replaced computers in our lab, class set of iPads, etc., etc., etc. Yet, given the ongoing costs of purchasing and maintaining these devices, I am not sure that this is a sustainable model. I would be interested in hearing more about this as it unfolds. Thanks!

Wow, BYOD in K-6! I love the boldness of that move. Our IT Dept is more traditional in its approach so I am very interested how that initiative turns out. Cheers, Gordon.

Hi Jesse! I'm also a big Silicon Valley fan and am originally from Manitoba, so I guess we have that in common. I'm always excited to see a fellow "non-teacher" in the group, since I think we tend to have a completely different perspective on what it means when compared to those in the classroom every day. Looking forward to hearing more from your IT-centric perspective.

Welcome Jesse! We're currently working on BYOD for the 7/8's in our K-8 school. I would certainly appreciate any insights you are willing to share :) The husband of one of my colleagues is involved with SMART as well in their product development team. Perhaps this might be an avenue to explore for a project?
