My name is Sarah and I live in Ottawa, Ontario, with my husband and 2 adorable children, Adele who is four, and Asher who is 18-months-old. I have been teaching English (and occasionally, history) at the secondary level for 12 years, commuting to a small town outside of Ottawa. I had a brief stint at a private American school in South America at the beginning of my career, but let’s just say after a series of events that could probably be the makings of a decent comedy, culminating in a mugging, I decided to head back to the Great White North!
I tried playing around with this UBC blog site last term to see if could accomplish anything butI found it a little confusing and challenging to navigate. I’m really looking forward to working on this platform because–at least for me–playing around with a new tool is the best way to learn! Take the bulls by the horn, I say!
My reasons for taking this course? Well, there’s a few, but to be honest, my husband has definitely inspired me in this direction. I know this isn’t a “business” course, but my husband has the heart and mind of an entrepreneur. He started his first business in his teen years and to fund his university studies, he used his tuition money to buy a small business and a house nearby. At 19, he became a Landlord, renting the rooms to other university students to pay his mortgage, running his business during the day and going to classes in the evening. I would never have thought to do this and find him so inspiring.
Our daily life is literally punctuated by ideas. He has so. Many. Ideas. And now I have so many ideas! It’s kind of contagious. Before children, he would wake me up:
“Sarah? … Are you awake?”
“I am now!”
“Okay good, I was thinking… “
(Now he wouldn’t dare because let’s be honest, sleep is a precious commodity with two young children around!) We have discussed so many hypothetical ventures; it’s a “thing” we’re famous for in our group of friends and family. I’m really excited to talk about, learn about and consider all kinds of ideas this term! Here’s to learning!
