Twine – interactive fiction for all!

By Dominic Maggiolo on June 20, 2016

Hey everyone,

I wrote my analyst report on a great piece of open sourced software called Twine. Twine allows you to write non-lineare, text-based games. I’ve used it countless times in my classroom. Though not inherently popular in the education sector (yet), I have a feeling it will catch on to some degree. Perhaps not Twine (though it is one of the more popular interactive fiction writer), writing interactive fiction will become something a lot more accepted and regarded as good for students in schools. I’ve published my work on medium, have a look!

Thanks for choosing this as your analysis Dominic - I remember you introducing it to me in a group project earlier in my MET and I not being able to fully understand it, but I definitely do now! I can also feel that it is finally a venture technology that I can apply to my educational situation unlike most things that I have been exposed to so far (there are surprising limitations as an EFL professor to ET applications). It might not be out in the market to make a profit, but the contributions and positive effects Twine can have on educational environments are considerable and I look forward to its future in teaching.

Very interesting indeed, Dominic. I had not encountered Twine before, but have spent a number of years working with open source software. Many of the projects I have been involved in have created for-profit business models on top of open source software markets. It's an interesting combo as the open source mindset thrives, but revenue allows for stability and growth - in some ways it is a bit of a split personality business. When I viewed the Twine site I can see the potential for off-shoots using this hybrid model that could be very interesting. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for introducing this application Dominic. I can see a lot of use for this, both in the context you present it here and in a post secondary context. Storytelling is a very important skill and it is important to note that all records, histories and reports, even analysis of data is a form of storytelling. I can see this as a very useful tool for laying out a study, creating hypotheses, understanding how data can be used and analyzed to answer and ask specific questions or how a report or notes support an argument, a legal record or field report. You make a persuasive argument and I enjoyed reading the story of Twine!
