Reality Plus – Virtual and Augmented Reality Lesson Creator

By gudaniel on July 21, 2016

ETEC 522,

I have put together a venture pitch for an endeavor called, “Reality Plus”. The concept for Reality Plus is centred all on the creation of virtual and augmented reality lessons. Reality Plus is an app that a teacher or instructor can use in order to create lessons that can be view on android and apple products. There is also a lesson library that would be accessible to members of Reality Plus. Virtual and Augmented reality technologies is something that interests both students and teachers.

One Minute Elevator Pitch – Reality Plus

Full Venture Pitch – Reality Plus

Virtual and Augmented Reality are two very exciting technologies and providing a simple way to created these types of lessons would allow for this technology to be included inside and outside of the classroom with ease.

Thank you for watching my pitch – Daniel Charron

Reflection

During the planning and developing stages of the project I found myself a bit lost on where to go next. I did not have a business background to fall back upon. My foundational knowledge in business ventures has been only gained through my exposure to various pitches and ventures during this course. The first step that I took was to write down a few ideas that I had about products that I would like to be developed. Throughout my experience in the MET program I have become very interested in virtual and augmented reality.

These technologies have been in the forefront of many conversations in the recent years. Augmented Reality has even popped up in the recent Pokémon Go app. There has been an increased level of interest in both technologies. The organization that I work for has been showing interest in both virtual and augmented reality, thus why I wanted to develop a venture pitch around those technologies. The process to decide on an overall focus was challenging and very time consuming. Having a focus certainly paved the way ahead. One of the keys to Reality Plus is the fact that lessons can be constructed in order to take advantage of the strengths of virtual and augmented reality. The ability of mobile technology to reach students should be welcomed in education and a program like Reality Plus can give an educator another tool to use.

The biggest weakness to my venture pitch is the lack of experience that I have developing software. The Reality Plus product needs to be program by a computer programmer. I do not have such skill sets and would needs to hire a team of experts. The start-up cost would need to be substantial in order for a team to be hired to create the product. The start-up costs would be recouped and paid in full upon a successful product and effective marketing of Reality Plus.

The strength of my venture pitch is the easy to use technology. There are many products that exist that do not make using their product simple. A central focus of my venture is structured behind a product that is simple, thus the idea of the drop and drag concept. Building a virtual or augmented reality lesson would be as simple as building a website.

Overall, this has been a very positive learning experience. The project has tested me in many different ways and has exposed me to the business world. After creating my product, I have been more interested in various educational products that exist. Having an increased interest is a positive attribute as I will be more up-to-date on what educational technology exists.

REVIEW: Cool. Well researched and well presented. Topical and current. It does however have room to grow. VR and AR are still privileged tools and unfortunately not accessible to many. This is a costly venture and could cause many economical issues. If well funded and supported, it could prove otherwise. While I believe VR and AR are not quite there for use in the classroom, I'm certain that eventually this could be of good use. I do find it flashy. Sure it'll hook some students, but it hasn't proven otherwise. Your business is time sensitive. You need the best of the best to manage and work this venture. The market is so unbelievably competitive, especially with Google and the likes. Overall, well articulated pitch.

Feedback A Very concise Venture pitch. I think you have a focus on a very up and coming opportunity, especially in education. I liked the phrasing in your full pitch of “living a lesson through digital means” it worked well in helping me visualize your pitch point meaning. I also liked that you spelled out the secondary markets that this venture has an ability to work within. There are a couple of comments that I would like to add for your consideration 1) With this approach to learning, will users need to use a viewing device to take advantage of the virtual reality component? 2) You make mention of digital publishers taking advantage of this app, I wonder if a more lucrative approach for you would be to license the technology behind the app and let them develop for their own needs and you still get paid. 3) For the shared lessons that teachers develop and share on a lesson, are they customizable? Can I just download and lesson and take what I want to use in something else or in a different version of a topic that maybe more precisely meets my needs? I have to admit that the elevator pitch didn’t give me much meat to go on but I felt much more informed after viewing the full pitch. As and EVA if I could get most of the functionality described above built into the app I would definitely invest.

Hi Daniel! We submitted similar types of apps. Take a look at my submission if you get a chance. I’m glad you also planned for your app to be cross platform, that is huge for adoption across markets. You also explain that lessons will be able to be created right from a tablet, which will also drive adoption and make it easy to build a database quickly even in the field. Your emphasis on possible earnings based on current market trends in convincing. I like the idea of giving out free trials to get people involved. I would be curious to see more about the student interface and how they would interact with it. I think it is definitely pushing in the right direction and would interest investors like school boards.

Daniel, really great job here identifying a very future-thinking app. Given the sudden and overwhelming success of Pokemon Go, this seems like a great time to introduce an AR/VR education-based app - there's got to be TONS of ways that teachers could find really thoughtful and applicable use of this app. Your business plan is great, really detailed information that would provide a potential investor with the right knowledge to make an informed decision. As you acknowledge, the development time of the software is definitely going to be the biggest hurdle here; the key will be to keep the costs low enough to allow for the business model you outline, while keeping the UI simple enough to promote widespread adoption. I particularly think the "open source" aspect of this - or how teachers are given the ability to create their own lessons vs using pre-existing lessons - is one of the strongest features. Similar to my own venture pitch, I think the biggest success (in terms of penetration and adoption) would be having specific key teachers use the program first, as a means to get more teachers on board. There's bound to be people who simply won't want to learn how to use a new platform, but the key teachers would end up being the biggest advocate. Great job!

FEEDBACK: I really liked the video and how you were able to create this desktop with the ability to click on the screen and bring down files. It felt like a game and had a nice face to the program. I wonder how you did that and I wouldn't even know where to start. Having you in the video personally and also the game face on the screen really helped me visualise what your product was all about. Thank you for your video and I learned that you can make a video with a game face on your screen.

FEEDBACK: This is a great idea... but as you say, there will need to be a team of experts working on its implementation. I do know that students can build decent 3D models (using SketchUp, Photoshop, etc), and there are ways to view these objects using Google Cardboard (see our site http://etec522virtualreality.weebly.com/activity-2-google-cardboard.html for details!).. so I don't think it's too much of a stretch to have textbooks incorporated into the mix... Students could share 3D objects that can be targeted at certain spots in the textbook (something like a QR code, that would work with smartphones) and 'upranked', so that the top-rated 3D objects can be viewed by anyone with the textbook. Just a thought!

Hello Dan, your Venture Pitch was precise and I understood what your market focus and pain point target is. I especially like the idea of how user friendly your UI is despite the challenges that you and your developer team will face trying to use both the Android and iOS platforms. Your pitch reminded me what the AR/VR week presenters were sharing with us and now I have a better understanding of the potential of this technology within the next 3-5 years.

Well done!! Daniel. As the founder of Reality Plus, you clearly articulated the product, designed the product demo and explained the competition, business plan and plan for use of investment. This Reality Plus community concept reminds me of the Scratch Community. As a student of this ETEC522, you have taken the learning about VR and AR to a step further! I truly enjoyed your venture idea and venture pitch!

Hi Daniel! Thanks for your Venture Pitch! I do like the idea of easy to use software like Reality Plus because other packages have been very successful in other spaces including Wix and Weedbly in the Web Development. In terms of the cost, I'm not sure if the model discounts the product too much to the point that it would take too long to turn a profit. The costs involved in building a WYSIWYG AR and VR platform from the ground up might be quite large.

“FEEDBACK” Hi Dan. You have created a very interesting and informative pitch. Your elevator pitch highlights a great deal of information and you successfully convey exactly what Reality Plus can do and who exactly it is targeted towards. This is difficult to do in just 1 minute but I feel that I have a pretty good understanding of what your product offers its users. In fact, you have a lot of information packed into 60 seconds! This could be a lot of information for some viewers/investors to take in. I also agree that virtual reality/augmented reality is going to greatly impact education and provides a good basis of why I may want to invest in your company. Further, you offer some of the membership costs associated with your product which gives some insight as to how I may be able to profit. Yet, as an investor I would still like to know a bit more how this is targeted (specifically) towards investors. As an educator, I would like to learn more about your product and how this could change my lessons. I would indeed spend the time to learn more about your product and whether it could be the right choice for me to invest. Great job!
