Hello from Hong Kong/Vancouver!

By pshui on September 14, 2016

Hello everyone,

My name is Christy, I am originally from Hong Kong and I will be staying in Vancouver this fall. (I just arrived today!) A brief introduction about myself: I am a researcher in political science (more specifically democratic development and government innovation) and I am currently an entrepreneur as well 🙂 I founded INVO, a nonprofit organization in Hong Kong to create an open source platform for shared data, to facilitate new ways of learning and to promote informed voting. I began my journey of MET before I founded INVO and I gained so much from the program as it fulfills my academic and entrepreneurial objectives in many ways, compensating my lack of formal training in education/technology.

In the past few months since the organization was formed, we created different online quizzes covering the topics of social/class segregation, social trust, voting advice application to promote informed voting (link: www.invohkapp.com/vaa2016/; we received over 20,000 online responses within the two weeks before this September’s Legislative election in HK :), voter behaviors and voter turnout. By designing and introducing entertaining, yet meaningful and educational quizzes online, we aim to open up the discussion of complex topics/issues to a wider audience and to promote the development of voter literacy and social research in a novel way, with data-driven methodology.

I am looking forward to be inspired by and learning with you all this semester!

Cheers,

Christy
