Venture
Teachable allows teachers to create a beautiful and powerful, payment-ready course website to monetize their knowledge. The founder’s vision was to empower everyone to teach online and make change. While many use Teachable for asynchronous video-based classes, teachers have used it to sell books, services, offline-online classes, group coaching, tutoring and webinars. Teachers can also control their branding, student data, and pricing, all from one place, without design or coding experience. Four types of monthly plans support unlimited courses and students. You can get a Free, Basic, Professional or High Volume Account. Depending on the plan, Teachable either takes a small or a 0% transaction fee.
Currently, there are 5,000+ entrepreneurial teachers and companies teaching online using Teachable.
Founder & CEO
Ankur Nagpal is the Founder of Teachable (former Fedora). He has a degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Prior to launching Fedora/Teachable, Ankur built Facebook widgets and earned over a $1M by the age of 21. He worked as an independent app developer on Facebook and acknowledges that he had connections in Silicon Valley that he could leverage. His Teachable journey wasn’t quite the same as someone starting from scratch.
Online teaching has always looked interesting for him. He knew that there were effective teachers teaching on Youtube, although they did not realize they were actually teaching. He wanted to help them structure their content on Udemy, Skillshare, etc. He helped to set up Udemy classes for them. Then he started working with Conrad Wadowski (Co-Founder of Fedora/Teachable) on creating their own content on Udemy. He started Teachable as a side project when he was teaching courses on Udemy as he reached his pain point. Initially, he did not have a vision to build a company, he built a really simple website for him and Conrad to teach and sell their courses. They made a couple of thousand dollars during the first week and started recruiting and soliciting people one at a time to start using this new experimental product. A side project grew up to become Fedora. They raised $2M in funding, hired two amazing developers (who are still with the company) and spent all of the money on building the product and then it became Teachable.
Co-Founder
Conrad Wadowski is the Co-Founder/Advisor at Teachable focused on growth, product and conducting mad science experiments in online education. Previously, he ran a growth hacking school with over 10,000 students.
The team provides a lot of support to teachers through training videos and free webinars on how to create your own online school and set up your first course using Teachable.
Reflection
I am very impressed with Ankur’s journey, what the team has built, and the amount of support they offer. The personal qualities that the founder has that have made his venture a success so far are a mix of enthusiasm, expertise and connections. The fact that they built their company solving their own problem helped them create the business that can solve problems of others wishing to teach online. I think this is a platform that I will choose to build and sell my online courses.
