Virtual and Augmented Reality – Market Analysis

By charkirk on May 25, 2017

This site provides current information and research on incorporating Augmented Reality (AR) into organizations and government agencies.  Augmented Reality for Enterprise Alliance (AREA) is a global organization designed  with a mission to “…help accelerate the adoption of enterprise Augmented Reality by creating a comprehensive ecosystem”.  It is a global, member driven organization focused on smooth transitioning and adoption of AR.  Any commercial or non-commercial organization or a government agency of any size can join.

It works to serve the needs of:

  1. Customer organizations and users of AR – enterprises of all sizes, managers of cultural heritage sites, and other types of organizations that use AR technology to reduce costs and increase value and quality.
  2. Providers of enterprise AR tools, technologies and complete solutions – companies of any size that provide AR technology, AR tools, AR development and integration services to customers.
  3. Non-commercial entities involved providing benefits to specific stakeholders – For example: universities and trade schools, civic, regional and national government agencies (and government-regulated agencies)
Rating
Average: 4.4/5 Stars

Thanks for the great site on AR and VR. It really caught my eye as BCIT has just invested in both AR and VR technology. We just had a chance to see and try it out last week, but were left with a bit of a feeling of ‘where do we go with this’ Once we finished chasing ants in a desert or taking apart a 3D model of the human body, there wasn’t much in the way of to apply it to our classes. What I liked about this site was it had a section on ‘Practical Applications of Augmented Reality in Healthcare’ (A little self-focused of me) From there it lead me to more articles, research, and resources that look quite pertinent. In terms of the broader community of educators, it was also great with the search function with ‘education’; several pages of interesting articles and items came up, especially their Weekly Roundup of Market Reports and a report on the future of the mobile AR market. It’s a great site that pulls together all the information and market reports on this specific area of interest. I think as an educator the sight might be too heavily focused on IT and less on best practice in education. However, as a potential future ‘venturer’ I would definitely keep an eye on this site. Who knows? So far most of the uses seem to be learning anatomy and physiology in 3D, and nothing on nursing (skills, critical thinking, interactions). Maybe I’ll be the one to make the first AR/VR patient that students can work and learn on. Bye Bye fussy expensive manikins. ☺ I would definitely recommend it to a colleague if they were looking to create a product in AR/VR. Eva

I have a keen interest in AR and finding ways to incorporate its use in my teaching. I have used QR codes with links to videos on notes packages. This I would consider equivalent to dipping my toes into a vast ocean of AR possibilities. But hey, you have to start somewhere! Another area in my personal life where I interact with AR is when I mt bike. On a ride I turn on my strava app, which logs my rides and compares it (virtually) to others who have ridden those same trails. It builds a leaderboard for each trails segment and heatmaps (showing areas that are heavily ridden). There are even cities now paying for strava's big data to inform traffic/transportation decisions! Another app that has AR aspects is trailforks. Here you can see where you are on a trail, see a map of all trails around you, and click on photos and get info about the trails around you. It is fantastic for exploring new areas. My big question is how do I use the power of AR in my classroom?

This seems like a wonderful website. It was a little bit hard however to find things specifically for education. On the first page there were a lot of things on AR in Real Estate, AR in Health Care, etc. It would perhaps be better for educational needs if it was easier to navigate that portion of it. I also wonder how important the membership is for accessing the best material on this site. In fact, the area where you have to sign up admits that this is a site mostly used for engineers but then states that other disciplines are welcomed. That might be worrisome for some people here who are really more teaching focused. But I personally am obsessed with the topic of AR so I personally loved the site. So thank you for posting this. I suspect this will be a site that will be clear in who it attracts and who it pushes away.

Great share! I've been aware of Augmented Reality for roughly four years now, starting when it was still a very new technology. At the time its functionality was considered somewhat niche and it was hard to imagine its potential for greater societal implications, what standards would develop around its use, and whether adoption would become as mainstream as other smartphone technologies such as QR codes. I think the fact that AREA exists is especially useful for learning technology specialists and venturers, who will help contribute towards creating the 'comprehensive ecosystem'. I personally am bookmarking this site to visit in the future as I think I fit nicely into the group 3. My students are invested in harmoniously pairing print with digital and see the benefit in AR to achieve this. Google is really pushing AR technology forward with Google Lens, which will allow users to employ the power of search by utilizing a phone camera.
