My name is Derek and this will be my first course in the MET program. I’ve always had a passion for education, and recently graduated from UBC with my Bachelor’s in Education with a Major in Technology Education.
I’ve had a diverse experience with post-secondary education, including studies in mathematics, history and technology education. I signed up for the MET and ETEC courses because I think it is one of the best opportunities I have to share my experiences and learn from others inside and outside the education system. The course objectives and anecdotal experiences I’ve read about student experiences seem to align with my goals in furthering my career in education, whether it be as a teacher or through another route within the realm of education.
Currently, I am a full time Technology Education teacher in Richmond, B.C. with a Power Mechanics, Automotive, Woodshop, Information Technology and Applied Technology course load. In addition, I’ve had many years of experience working in recreation for adults and youth, camps and after-school programs for children and managing diverse learners in a variety of settings.
I have attached a photo of myself and 2 friends, in which we attended a GoGlobal exchange through UBC to Zurich, Switzerland. There, we worked in schools for 3 weeks and exchanged cultures and educational content. Studying and learning abroad is also an additional interest of mine, and the 3 weeks spent there has only invited me to want to pursue further studies internationally.
I look forward to collaborating with all of you and exploring any new opportunities to learn and share.
Derek
