Hello from Surrey, BC

By Jonathan Nilson on January 6, 2018

Hi Folks!

My name is Jon Nilson and I am a high school digital media teacher and IT support/tech facilitator in Surrey, BC. This is my 9th MET course and I am looking forward to all the new perspectives and ideas that accompany a new class and group of students as they have always triggered growth in my practice.

I am quite excited but also a bit nervous about what we will be investigating in ETEC 522. As I have always worked for the public school system, I have seldom explored those areas of education that relate to the “marketplace” or educational “for-profit” ventures. So much of that element will be completely new to me.

Yet concurrently, I also realize that the majority of technology we access for educational purposes is a product of “for-profit” motives, as is the push for continued technological development. This includes many of the services that are now integral to my practices such as Google Classroom and Freshgrade. As such, I am curious to explore those areas of technology that are market-place driven yet have not been co-opted by education yet, as well as potentially identifying unique educational opportunities in schools that may in turn only be developed if someone sees an opportunity to meet a market-place need.

Looking forward to working and learning with you all!

Jon Nilson
