Here is my canned intro I use in each course:
My name is Ryan and I live in Winnipeg and work in Extended Education at the University of Manitoba as an instructional designer. It’s been an interesting career path to where I am now. I’m originally from Edmonton and graduated with a BEd from U of A. After that I taught junior high in Sweden for two years. When I came back to Canada my teaching license had expired. I wasn’t too keen on teaching again so I took a job with the non-profit Centre for Public Legal Education Alberta as an adult educator. During this time I completed an Adult and Community Education certificate from U of C. When my partner was transferred to Winnipeg for work I was lucky enough to find a job at the U of M which I have been at for the last 3 years. I like to travel and have a miniature schnauzer named Olive.
This course was actually one of the reasons I chose to take the MET. I think many people in this class will be familiar with the high rate of teacher burn out. I have a lot of friends that are no longer teaching and have found success in a variety of fields. I think the skills we have as teachers are transferable to many different careers and in particular lend themselves well to business. I find start up culture really interesting and am excited to learn more about it. I’m looking forward to working with all of you.
