Hello from China

By Winter Wang on September 7, 2018

Hello everyone,

My name is Winter Wang. This is my first term of MET program. I came to Canada from China when I was 17 years old. I completed my BBA degree from SFU in 2012. After that, I worked at Estee Lauder Canada and Bank of Beijing for 2 years respectively because my undergraduate majors are finance and International Business.

At then, I never thought I would join the Education field. But now, I am working for an online education corporation in China, which makes free English teaching podcast, investment consulting podcast, video courses as well as paid English teaching courses on various mainstream Chinese platforms, such as WeChat Apps, Weibo, Ximalaya, NetEaseMusic, etc. The English teaching podcast has over 10 million subscribers in total from all platforms and over 10,000 students paid for the online English courses. I am a part of the teaching department which is responsible for all podcast, live courses, video courses’ design and production.

Media education has grown rapidly in China these 2-3 years and there is still huge potential market. I became very interested in this area. On one hand, that’s because I became a mom one year ago. Being a mom made me start to think about education and want to learn more about it. On the other hand, when I was pondering whether I should pursue another education study, a series of child abuse scandals in Chinese kindergartens were exposed, causing me deep grief and shock, but also a deeper passion and determination to work in the field in order to “be the change that I want to see in the world. “

With my past academic and professional experiences, I know that the best place I can get authoritative and cutting-edge industry information is the school. Therefore, I applied MET program. I joined a media education company and I am looking for good education project, especially media education projects that I could bring back to China, offering to Chinese kids and parents in the future.

I am very glad to meet you all who have so much teaching and managing experiences in education field. I hope to learn a lot from this course as well as from all of you. I know I will.

Best of luck!

Winter

Hi Winter I have a question that might smack of cultural ignorance but it is something I need to know so I'll take the risk. In the past when I've had Chinese students that needed to go home for a period of time, for example Visa problems or health concerns, they were unable to access my course LMS from mainland China. (Alternatively, they didn't want to do any course work and were exploiting my aforementioned cultural ignorance.) Are you confident you will be able to consistently access the course sites? Or, does anyone else have any reputable information bout how Chinese students in China access online courses from North American institutions? Thanks, Jan

Hi Winter. It's good to meet someone who is living in the same time zone as I am - GMT +8. Which part of China are you living in? I am amazed at how widespread and available English lessons are in China, both free and paid. This is something Vietnamese learners desire to have - good quality, personalised and well-sequenced ESL lessons that they can access on the move. I hope to understand this market better and further develop my current platforms to capitalise on the learning technologies that have emerged. I am looking forward to learning from your experience in this field. Happy mothering!

Hello Winter and nice to meet you! I would like to thank you for sharing your working experience. I did know WeChat is a giant company in China but never knew they provided those type of services. It got me thinking if similar companies around the world (Japan - Line, Korea - Kakaotalk) also have similar programs as what your company is doing. Thanks!

Hi Winter - nice to meet you! I've been hearing a lot about microlearning ESL programs over WeChat and would love to know more about how it's being used. In a previous group project for 510, my group and I designed an online ESL website geared towards kids (you can check it out at https://metatubc.wixsite.com/510designproject). I'd love to know more about your Educational Media company. Good luck with managing the MET program and a toddler - I know all about it! :)

Hi Winter, Mind if I ask which company in China you are working at? I'm very interested in joining it as well :) The podcasts and English teaching courses in your blog sound extraordinary! I came to Canada from Shenzhen, China when I was 17 as well, and currently work as a versatile tutor in Vancouver. I completed a psychology degree in SFU two years ago. I hope that you will learn what you need in this course! Tovey
