Foci- a portable device that boosts awareness of focussing

By Aggie on September 19, 2018

I came across this inidiegogo that was funded in 5 hours. It is a wearable device that helps you monitor when you are focusing.

(Not sure if my computer is the issue, but the audio and video seem out of sync). NO, I would not invest in FOCI. The product is unoriginal; focus monitors as well as apps with emotional control and focus tips are a dime a dozen. As wearable tech, I'm not sure what the benefit of having something clipped to your pants instead of worn as a watch or a necklace is, and am skeptical of the accuracy with different clothes and of the way the device measures 'focus'. Consider the temporary stress, happiness, excitement we feel when watching a riveting movie, or when reading and mentally responding to an academic text. Would those show up as distractions? The video also showed that the device sent a notification about a stressful phone call with a client, suggesting that the user "be calm next time." It is unclear if that suggestion comes from the app or is a mental reprimand. In either case, such micro-monitoring of ourselves seems likely to increase stress levels, and gives us more to be distracted about. Switching to the CEO and team: We have no information about them, except that they worked with Cambridge Enterprises. After watching the video a second time, the names and credentials scrolling by are simply testimonials, not information about the team. For a project that was conceived and tested within a few months, I question whether it really is innovative, or ready for crowdfunding. To summate, the elevator pitch simply leaves too much to question, does not ascertain how it is different from other status-monitoring wearable tech, and shows no credibility or branding.

Yes, I would invest in the FOCI. The statements with focal points with facts keeps the audience engaged. A device that sounds like essential tool in our daily lives ( affecting the 6 mind states), it is simple to use, the presentation on the app looks very appealing. The FOCI is targeted for a very large pool of people. Even the busiest people would be able to use this device. They discuss the problem (lack of focus) and state in ways to increase it. Data collection along with the clip, tracking motion of breathing sounds interesting.

Yes, I would invest in the FOCI device. The creators have done a great job capturing the attention of the audience by saying that focus is something we all do, however not many of us do it well and that there is room for improvement. With our minds being bombarded each day with lots of new information, having an app that will help you regulate and improve your focusing is huge. The device is simple enough for most people to understand and seems to have a user friendly interface. As an potential investor, this video touched on all the questions I had and explained how it works in a clear and concise manner. The video made it clear of the purpose of the foci and did not market it as a necessity, rather as a self improvement tool. Overall, this pitch was compelling and I can see many different buyers using this product in an array of uses such as in marketing studies, classrooms and offices.

Yes, I would invest in this venture as an EVA. The elevator pitch starts off by pointing out the pinch point of how we have difficulties focusing for a longer period. It is then followed by a statistic of how we get distracted every 3 minutes, which converts to 31 days a year. I would like to start off by saying that the team has done a great job starting their pitch with a pinch point that everyone in the world can personally relate to from young to old. FOCI tries to solve this problem by tracking our breathing pattern to track our subconscious using a wearable device and an app. It also helps to identify 6 mind states (Distracted, Fatigue, Calm, Focus, Flow and Stress) that can be accompanied by some mental strategies to help a person achieve deep focus. This is the difference of FOCI compared to its competitors as FOCI helps and coaches a user to train their mind. In addition, the app that comes with FOCI will record the details of your mental state for the user to review and improve. FOCI has started its campaign on Indiegogo with a starting price of $73 to $549 USD, depending on the number of rewards. Looking at their Indiegogo webpage, the team does a good job of providing essential information for investors. Starting from the production time, specifications on FOCI, and numbers of testimonials from real users. However, I feel that they could have done a little more with describing the team and their roles. Overall, this was a great pitch.

Yes, I will invest in this FOCI program. The opening of the pitch, presented by its co-creator Mick Adams, catches people's pain point right away--the problem about focusing. Intuitively, everyone knows that not being able to focus consistently on work is a serious problem in mobile Internet age. Shortly after he catches audiences' attention, he pointed out their solution to the problem--working on "the most powerful part of our mind--subconsciousness." And the information he conveyed in the sentence that "no body is thinking of using ..." tells us that they wanted to be the first one in the market to work on exploiting "subconsciousness". Moreover, what differentiates their product further from current competent products in the market is that they do not only want to track and remind people's focusing status like competitors do, but also to teach people how to manage their subconsciousness to deep focus condition. The pain point may be caught by others, but they've gone a step-further on the way to solve it. This is very appealing. Besides, I like the part that they showed people their product--what it looks and how it works, which feeds our imagination of the product. At the last part, another co-founder showed up and presented the technology and research base of their product. It is great that more than one creator presented, and obviously the two are responsible for different aspects, one for the idea presentation, and the other for the research and technology exhibit. Overall, this is a great elevator pitch for me based on my current vision.
