Springboard – Gautam Tambay

By dustin hyde on September 25, 2018

Gautam Tambay is the Co-Founder & CEO of Springboard, a recent (2015) ed tech start up that has made some serious noise in the world of online education. At Springboard prospectives students have the opportunity to pursue an “in-demand”, mentor based approach to online education in a variety of of 21st centuries careers (cybersecurity, digital marketing, and business and design ) where students:

  1. are paired with an industry expert mentor
  2. be exposed to curriculum curated by industry experts
  3. learn through real life projects
  4. are (in some cases) guaranteed a job or tuition is refunded!

Not only does Springboard offer its students online educational courses that are paired with weekly, face to face expert mentorship, Springboard has also found a niche market in the world of online education where students have the opportunity to take courses to piece together an educational profile that suits their interest (as opposed to taking expensive and time consuming entire degree programs).  See below for a nice comparison chart:

Gautam Tambay and co founder Parul Gupta raised $1.7 million in seed round, recently has raised just shy of $10 million and is backed and endorsed by some big investors including the CEO of Linkdin.  To date, Springboard has graduated over 5000 students, has over 250 mentors and is educating students in nearly 80 countries.  Students who have graduated Springboard courses and “career tracks” have gone on to work at major companies such as Google, Samsung, Visa, Amazon, McAffee, and AirBnB to name a few.

Tambay is a reputable CEO that holds a bachelors degree in mechanical engineer from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi and and MBA in entrepreneurial management, operations and information management from the University of Pennsylvania.  To date, he has been involved in the ed tech industry previously working at InMobi where he was the director of business and corporate development.  It was here that he honed ed tech insights, skills, and built the business relationships to capitalize on an online ed tech market that is now booming.

Below is a recent (this year) promotional video created by Tambay and Gupta marketing their new UX Career Track where they guarantee prospectives students a job in that industry with a money back guarantee.

And finally a student testimonial:

Springboard was new to me so it was interesting to read more about it on their website. It's particularly relevant to me since I work in Continuing Education for adults. One of the real benefits I see in this program is the mentorship component. There are quite a few of these types of online services like Udemy and Coursera. It's tempting to think this is the future but they really haven't caught on with the general public. For example I think the average learner/consumer would look at what's offered locally at post-secondary institutions. I wonder what will be the tipping point for this type of thing to get traction. I think public institutions have the benefit of real social roots in the community but I also think at times that can make them complacent. In my own experience as a student I feel frustrated that some content seems to be filler content and I really can't customize my learning. For example there have been times within the MET program where I wish I could explore something in further depth and drop things that I know I will never use (despite being required). I couldn't help but notice that another major educational tech company was started by someone without a background in education. This seems to be a trend.

Dustin, what I like about Springboard is the idea that they are trying to personalize learning towards the individual student. The concept of proving a mentor is intriguing and could reshape the way educators view online classes. Gautam's unique background has allowed him to view the online educational course in a different lens and has allowed him to change the way we look at personalized online learning.

Hi Dustin, I find Springboard a very interesting platform. To me, Gautam Tambay has a unique set of skills he has acquired through engineering and an MBA. It is quite a testament to his entrepreneurship how Springboard has enabled its students to work for some of the biggest tech companies across the globe (Google, Airbnb, Amazon etc...). Gautam provides the skills and strengths necessary to be a great leader and I'm sure the ed tech world will be hearing more about him in the near future.
