Vreakout – Immersive Escape Room for Education

By Heeweon Joo on November 23, 2018

Hello Everyone,

At Vreakout, we believe that immersive education in combination with the concept of escape room can create whole new ways of providing a different but also engaging and motivating
classes for students. As we grow, we hope to teach and challenge students and teachers to experience the joy of problem-solving.

Vreakout is a subscription-based Canadian EdTech company that creates virtual reality rooms full of puzzles and challenges that requires students to use the concept they have learned to overcome and finally, escapes. Vreakout engages students in various means, such as by reading a short text, watching, listening to the surrounding, interacting and problem-solving.

Rooms are presented in a Virtual Reality environment with the partnership with Oculus Go. The remote controller with the VR headset allows students to interact with the environment as if the room is real. Rooms are filled with puzzles and clues that will guide the students to the final key code that is needed to open the exit door.

Hi Heeweon, I really enjoyed learning about Vreakout! What a creative idea. I especially appreciate the integration of technology with skills such as collaboration which you don't often find together. This venture caters to a variety of learners as well, and promotes hands-on learning that one does not often think of when utilizing technology. Being a primary grades teacher, I understand this isn't necessarily targeted at my grade level just yet, but would be very excited for something like this to come to fruition. I really love that this program focuses on critical thinking and problem-solving - skills that are so important but also very difficult for so many learners. When you mention that a subscription gives you access to 10 rooms, does the consumer get to select from a variety to fit various themes or subject areas, or is it a one bundle available to all learners? The incorporation of a reflection at the end of each challenge is also so valuable, and often missing from lessons. Not only does this activity provide students with so many opportunities to practice important skills, it allows for continual self-improvement.

Incredible, Heewon! This idea is just awesome and it's so easy to see how learning can invigorated by Vreakout. I could use it for aspects of learning in the professional world, to be honest, Both your pitch products were strong and on point with respect to collaboration, problem solving critical thinking and combined pedagogies. I really appreciate the attention you've given to the funding allocation and can see how that would provide potential investors with enough information to want to get in touch for more. It's interesting that you're focus will be higher education and I like the AI direction. I would love to learn more about how the escape rooms will scale in difficulty, subject matter and whether the rooms themselves 'learn' from the human interaction. The addition of a contact form shows you are committed and proactive to interested parties. If I were an investor, I would certain be in touch with you, to learn more about you and your team. Bravissimo!

Hello Heeweon. This was a well though out venture. This is an idea that could really have an immediate impact in K-12 classrooms through North America. You plan was solid and attainable and the price point is within a range that public and private school administrators would be willing to spend in an effort to enhance the learning experience in the classroom. My question is which subject areas would you target first? Starting in a concentrated area but ensuring that you have ironed out all the kinks would ensure that you can build the word of mouth market that you would need to encourage other educators to invest in this product.

Hi Heeweon, What an awesome venture, I can see this being in classrooms in the next five years. I thought your elevator pitch touched on all aspects of your venture- great job. Your marketing plan is solid, I did the math and saw that the cost for the subscription is 16$ per student. With 10 escape rooms that's about 1.60$ a game, or 30$ to play a classroom session with 20 players. That's the cost of one escape room in Vancouver. My questions is regarding availability of videos, you stated that there would be 10 videos available with the subscription, would they differ in difficulty? For example, would there be a grade 12 and a grade 9 version of a video or just 10 videos in total? Great job Heeweon!

Wow! Amazing job Heeweon. I really believe that you have nailed the assignment criteria with a viable product, plan, and company in a niche market area. Escape rooms are taking off and according to updraftventures.com escape rooms in the US have increased from 0 int 2014 to over 1800 today. The idea of bringing escape rooms into educational contexts is brilliant and I felt you did a fantastic job of articulating how and why this approach to immersive, gamified learning is important and marketable. I would love the opportunity to invest in this type of company and feel that the first to market in an educational context is a viable and exciting opportunity. Great job Heeweon!

Such a clever way to incorporate gamification, Heeweon! As an EVA or if I were an educational institution rep, I would absolutely consider investing in your venture. You incorporate student engagement, collaboration, and new technology (VR) into a product that could realistically benefit learners. As a follow-on venture, you might even want to think about developing a software package that users could develop their own escape rooms (Although in doing so you might be creating your own market competition...haha)! Just a thought! I also enjoyed the website design; you and Kate both really have a knack for well designed, organized and professional web sites! The simplicity of the product made it really easy for me, a prospective EVA investor, to understand its value in addressing your noted pain points. You very clearly indicated what the venture investment would be used for, and have a clear plan for both product and market growth. From the student perspective, your active learning and collaborative pedagogies used in your rooms combined with fun problem-solving puzzles will undoubtedly engage and improve student achievement. I'm excited to see VReakout disrupt the educational markets! Very well done! -Reg
