Greetings from Ulaanbaatar!

By Scott Lillis on May 6, 2019

Hi everyone! My name is Scott Lillis and I am the Technology Coach at the International School of Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia. I am originally from Kingston, Ontario and have taught previously in Ontario, Kuwait and Thailand.

My wife and I, along with our cats, moved here in August of 2017 and are wrapping up our second year teaching at this small international school of 350 students. My wife Andrea teaches Kindergarten here at the school and we are both completing our Masters’ while living and working abroad – although she is completing hers through Queen’s University.  This is my eighth course in the MET program and I just completed ETEC 523 which was also open to the world on WordPress. I will be taking my ninth course this Summer on campus as I was able to get into ETEC 565S: Digital Games, Learning & Pedagogy. I set my alarm to go off in the middle of the night since I logged in a few minutes too late last year and missed out!

We love our jobs teaching internationally – immersing ourselves in new cultures and working with so many diverse and unique students. A major focus for me has been working toward helping students become digital creators instead of consumers and finding fun ways for students to show their learning. I am a huge advocate of allowing students the freedom and opportunity to find their passions and to follow them – no matter what!

I look forward to collaborating and learning with all of you!

Scott

Hey Scott - great to see you in another class. And - it sounds like I'll get the chance to meet you in Vancouver this summer with the Digital gaming class.

Hi Scott! I am certainly in agreement with all of our classmates when I say that you and your wife are leading the lifestyle that many of us would love! It must be very cool to both be on board with moving abroad and taking your passions for education across the globe. As a new student to the MET program, I didn't get an opportunity to register in ETEC 565S but it sounds like it is going to be a really worthwhile and impactful course. I will have to keep my eye out for it next summer! Looking forward to hearing all about your experiences as the course carries on!

Hi Scott, what you and your wife do sounds so interesting and rewarding. Your focus to help students become digital creators and show their learning in creative ways is so important in our digital society. My interest is in EdTech and entrepreneurship, but my focus/goal is the same.

Hi Scott! You're so lucky you managed to get in! I was so caught up in teaching that I totally missed the sign-up time. Side note - what are your cats names? Do they like Mongolia? I have a little bit of an animal obsession :) Can't wait to hear more about your adventures and I look forward to learning with you!

Good to see you again Scott. Looking forward to hopefully working with you this term, or seeing your products. How was the Google Trainer session with my colleague Gary?

Hello Scott! Great to meet you. What does a "technology coach" do? That's an interesting position at a school! (I was seconds too late from registering for the summer institute this year)
