Greetings from Burnaby!

By Jennifer L on May 7, 2019

Hello everyone, my name is Jennifer! I currently live in Burnaby, B.C. but I teach in Vancouver (an awesome 12-minute commute from home).

This is my second/third course in the MET program. I like using project-based learning and inquiry projects to encourage my students to care about what they are learning. For example, in one part of our dream vacation projects, students wrote to embassies asking for tour guides and maps. So exciting each time someone in the class gets a mail package! Another project I’m really proud of is their Young Entrepreneurs products. Students administered market surveys, created prototypes of their products, then created the actual products with a limit of $30 for material costs, wrote business plans, made marketing materials, and then sold their handmade items at the fair. It was a four-month long project, but sooo worth it. Using some of their profits (how much was up to them), they raised $300 for the SPCA.

My colleague and I are huge fans of incorporating tech into our teaching practice, so the things I’ve been taking away from these courses have been invaluable. Outside of work, I enjoy hoarding tea, baking, hiking, bullet journalling, and Black Mirror.

To be honest, I am not quite sure what to expect yet out of this course, so I’m open to any learning experiences here! As I am still quite new to the program, I hope to gain more knowledge about learning technologies, and bring that knowledge into my other courses too. The entrepreneurship aspect is interesting to me as well!

Hi Jennifer, Looking forward to working with you again! I think your entrepreneurship project you did sounds fantastic! I'd be curious to learn more about it. How much time was dedicated to the project each day?

Hi Jennifer, I have to agree with you that project-based learning really encourages students to have ownership of their own work or teamwork. I enjoyed having intermediate students work on their passion projects, unfortunately, I am now teaching grade ones and having them work on a passion project has proven to be a bit more challenging.

Hi Jennifer, what great ideas your have for project-based learning. I am sure your students learned so much in those 4 months, more than they would have if they were given more information and their learning was not interest-led and meaningful to them. I look forward to learning more about your projects and ideas.

Living in Burnaby and teaching in Vancouver is the exact opposite experience to me. And a 12 minute commute is also (sadly) not my experience.
