Hello from Vancouver!

By Ying Gu on May 8, 2019

Hello there! I am an asthmatic indoor rock climber and ultimate player who loves to cook (because I love to eat!). Action shots are hard to come by on the ultimate field, and this website has a small video upload limit, so here’s a screenshot of a video of my teammates trying to clear the field of geese before one of our games.

Professionally, I have taught two years at an all boys BC offshore school in China and currently teach at a private high school in West Vancouver. My passion is science and chemistry because there is something beautiful about understanding how things work in the world. Blowing stuff up is cool too.

I am taking this course so that I may evaluate new technologies effectively before bringing them into my classroom. Too often I see teachers jump from one hype to another without really thinking about whether or not the new tool actually benefits learning. We shouldn’t use technology for the sake of using technology. I am also hoping to learn how to stay up to date with new technologies so I am excited to begin our first assignment. The previous generation of teachers struggle with Microsoft Word and Excel, and my generation can’t code, one of the most relevant skills for young people today. Technology grows so insanely fast that I fear that I will become irrelevant soon. This concern along with BC’s new curriculum are my motivation for joining the MET program. This is my first semester in MET; I look forward to meeting and collaborating with everyone!
