Deloitte Insights: Tech Trends and Human Capital Trends

Deloitte Insights are free, open, and respected sources of information about trends that impact organizations. Two key annual publications are Tech Trends and Human Capital Trends. The Tech Trends publication is technology oriented and the Human Capital Trends focuses on the people side of innovation. These trends impact how technology is created and delivered which would include learning focused technologies. Further, these trends provide insights for those looking at how to scale learning within an organization.

To put context around the Tech Trends, they provide a view called “Trending the trends” that plots a decade of trends. This view highlights trend themes and positions the trends of the past in regard to where are today. A thoughtful exercise to build on such a view would be to try and anticipate where the trends go next.

Deloitte Insights also strives to support consumption of trend information through associated videos, executive summaries, case studies, survey results (including results from partnerships with organizations such as MIT) and some great summary graphics such as looks at the Digital Transformation Network, Human Principles for the Social Enterprise, Intelligent Interfaces Create Real-Time, Context-Aware, Automated Feedback Loops, and Considerations for Connectivity Technology Selection.

Last but not least, I appreciate the trend reports can be downloaded in their entirety, or a custom report can be created and downloaded with just the trends of interest.

Deloitte's suite of market projections is particularly valuable as they do not focus on one particular segment of industry. While the Tech Trends and Human Capital Trends covers mostly private industry, Deloitte has other market projects for public sector and not-for-profit business (see https://www2.deloitte.com/ca/en/pages/public-sector/articles/selected-issues-not-for-profit-organizations.html), As Deloitte is one of the most respected consulting and audit agencies, they present a unique insight into market projection. One of the things I appreciate most about their reports is they are human-focused. Even when analyzing the most disruptive technology, they include ethical consideration that impact employees and society at-large. As mentioned in this post, Deloitte also works closely with academic institutions and their reports present a lot of evidence toward the validity of their research methodology.

Thanks for sharing this, Lee. An educator wanting to understand the context of new and upcoming technologies can be overwhelmed when looking up information online and Deloitte's resources serve as a great place to start - especially if one wants to understand the development of the broader trends. The decade-long 'trending the trends' can be a useful way to see connections between technologies and also a useful starting point to research areas that one may not be familiar with (as there are terms that appear in the diagram which I found new myself). I believe this will be a resource I will return to in the future, both for the broader context and to drill in deeper when looking at/for details on specific technologies.

Thanks for recommending this resource Lee. The graphically pleasing interface and trends based on contemporarily grounded concerns were engaging and interesting. As a corporate trainer, I found it interesting to read in the “Learning in the flow of life” article that “…77 percent of organizations are increasing their learning team’s head count,” as a result of tight labor markets on the employer’s side requiring developing talent inside organizations to fulfill roles; this also requires greater investment in education technology to create learning cultures. I liked that this resource for tech trends and human capital trends are contemporary. I can find articles from 1 month ago grounded in research. I think that the broader community of educators, like me, can find an article relevant to their own interests. For those seeking to start ventures, there are resources which contextualize current trends which gives insight into customers’ concerns, interests and vocabulary. Especially because of the updating of this resource, I can see that I will be referring back to this resource. It has even made my exclusive ‘bookmark’ list! I could recommend this resource to anyone else interested in general trends with business orientation.
