Mitchel Resnick – Scratch Game Creator

By Brogan Pratt on May 29, 2019

Mitchel Resnick is known as the godfather of Scratch Game Creator. He is the Lego Papert Professor of Learning Research at MIT, the Director of Okawa Center, and the Director of the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at MIT. With an impressive number of developmental tool creations under his belt, he has supported:

  • The creation of Scratch game creator, along with co-founders Brian Silverman and Paula Bonta
  • The building blocks of “LEGO Mindstorms” coding software

However, he is most well known for the creation of the visual programming language “Scratch”, but often times is referred to as “blockly”. If you’re ever seen code like this before in an elementary school coding app,

Then you can thank Mitchel.

Mitchel’s guiding theory behind Scratch comes from Constructionist pedagogy, which is essentially constructivism in the physical environment (rather than the contructing of mental schemas, it is the physical act of building projects that best creates these new schemas), and focuses on project based learning styles. Mitchel and his co-founders clearly have a drive for scientific research and a venture spirit judging by the enormous success of their non-profit venture. They know how to create valuable content, as well as how to market this content to the broader community; perhaps not all on their own with help from their other group members and the MIT university as well.

Scratch Game Creator

If you’ve never played scratch before, you can check out some well known top games here. The experience is best on a desktop computer, but has recently become functional on mobile devices as well (though it should be noted the functionality is not perfect).

Scratch allows users to create their own video games in a visual language. Check out the link above for some fairly impressive coding feats for the platforms abilities. You’d be hard pressed to believe that students made these!

Scratch is a completely free, not-for-profit educational resource. Awesome.

The Scratch Team

It is difficult to narrow down the scratch team, having had over 63 members in the past who have had an involvement in the program’s development and current state. Almost all members have been Masters or PHD students at MIT, or have been visiting scientists, researchers, and programmers from various other universities around the globe. With how popular Scratch is, and how well the platform performs, it is clear that this team definitely has what it takes to make, and continue to develop, a successful not-for-profit learning venture.

Scratch is a remarkable tool and what Michell has created as an open source educational tool is quite remarkable. I would also imagine that the software that he developed previously is also quite powerful, though I am not familiar with it myself which I agree makes him a very successful entrepreneur. Based on the information provided here, however, I feel that as an aspiring entrepreneur that he may not be the best role model; primarily because of how the platform came about and the team that was involved. I think that as an entrepreneur, it would be difficult to relate to someone who had the minds of 63 of the some of the world's brightest minds from MIT and the like voluntarily working on a project with me. While I think it speaks to the importance of working with a strong team of like-minded individuals, especially if you are trying to create something that will be free to use, I don't know that it's a realistic expectation from many entrepreneurs. I don't feel that this takes anything away from the incredible tools tha the and his team have built, his success as an entrepreneur or that educational value that scratch brings to children aroudn the world; I simply feel that how his venture came about based on the story told here, may be quite different to what many entrepreneurs may be faced with (e.g. was his work/research funded by the university?).

I can't help but find Mr. Resnick and his work incredibly inspiring. Not only was Scratch an incredibly innovative product at the time, but the fact it was free made a huge impact on the movement to introduce coding into early education. In addition to this, I think there was a lot of intent and careful design that went into Scratch's user interface making it incredibly appealing to younger audiences. His group Lifelong Kindergarten also implements the kinds of design principles that I personally love. I think adults forget the joy and power of play, and Mr. Resnick's entrepreneurial efforts have reintroduced that play into many classrooms. Scratch continues to have an incredibly vibrant community and is a staple in coding education. Even with this fact Scratch continues to be free of charge, while pushing out meaningful updates. A truly wonderful addition to the ed-tech world!

Mitchel made a good choice working with entrepreneurs working with a programming language he created. Not only is it easier to support a venture using technology that you are familiar with, it benefits his original venture, somewhat evolving it. I was happy to learn that the guiding theory was Constructionism, as it compliments constructivism really well. Students can make use of Scratch Game creator whether they are working alone or with others. As we learned is common among entrepreneurs of learning technology, Mitchel himself is still working as a teacher with firm teaching philosophies guiding his innovations. The payoff from his venture is the ease with which students can be introduced to programming and front-end design, a goal which his team has successfully accomplished.
