#SocialMedia@school

By chava kassierer on June 16, 2019

Lift your eyes up from your Facebook feed; put that tweet on hold; and before you share that selfie on Instagram, check out why and how we should be using social media in the classroom.

Having been surprised at how few educators in this cohort thought social media is an emerging market worth investing in, I decided to research the stats and options out there, and do my analyst report on the place where over 2 billion people worldwide hang out, and how we can use it for education.

Social media can expand the benefits of collaborative learning and can help bridge the gap between school, home and community. Learning is after all ubiquitous. Therefore, I believe it is worth investing in social media designed for educational purposes that is safe for children; doesn’t allow personal info to be disclosed and involves a moderation team.

I was also surprised that social media in education wasn’t selected by the poll. Maybe because it is not seen as an education technology; students spend so much time on social media for personal use. You gave some great examples of how popular social media platforms can be used in the classroom to increase engagement and enhance learning. I would be concerned about privacy though. Students disclose a lot of personal info on sites like Facebook. However, I believe social networking platforms that are designed for children (e.g. Scratch and Edmodo) show great promise and are worth investing in.
