Week 10: Immersive Experience

By Ying Gu on July 7, 2019

One of the biggest demands facing industries across multiple disciplines is to grow and develop soft skills of employees and students. This demand has gained momentum, paralleling trends in globalization and the increasing presence of technology in the workplace, and VR is here to meet this need. As you explore our OER, you will learn more about IVR technology and how it is being used to develop interpersonal skills and shape human behaviour. As you explore the content, feel free to participate in the inter-activities at your own pace, as we will be monitoring discussions throughout the week.

As always, feel free to post any questions or comments in this course WordPress page as well. We look forward to interacting with you online and ask that you post your comments by the end of the week so that we can incorporate your feedback into our final version.

Hello Immersive Experience Team! great presentation.
The first Primer & Intro video was the one I enjoyed most. I think that the video really catches the visitor’s attention. The OER is well organized and easy to follow. The way that it has been presented it made me to wanted to even learn more about Immersive Experience.
My first real experience with VR was when a student brought his new gadget into my class and we all could give it a try. I enjoyed it very much, my only little complain was that I had to take off my glasses. I wonder if today’s VR headset has changed and is glasses friendly.
Your presentation on soft-skills was interesting. I think this is an additional tool that can be used in any type of learning. Soft skills is not like any other subject that can be learnt at school, it depends on the learner’s personality and social skills. If soft skills can be used with VR/AR/MR I am sure that these tools can be used for other subject too.

Well done on your OER! I liked how you started OER with introductive video to give us insight of what is immersive experience in learning. Your OER is well organized and it was easy to understand your topic. Whenever there is a discussion topic that I can reflect my own teaching environments, it makes me feel good because then I can consider different ways on to improve/change my own work environment to achieve better for both myself and the students. Thanks for engaging and interesting OER!

I'm fully impressed! I didn't even know such an opening video was a thing a person could just do on virtually no budget - so that was super cool. The layout of the site awesome, the animation in the infographic really made the presentation that much more enjoyable - really all the attention to detail is tremendous. And on a personal note, as someone who does well with what I learned from your site are soft skills such as empathy and hard work, I'm excited to know that in the future my tool box is going to be more sought after.

Hi VR OER team – thanks for the immersive experience – while I didn’t get to use a VR device to view the primer, it was great to see the way the technology could be used in our own context. The soft-skills focus was really practical and seemed really well-aligned with how VR can be used in many different contexts outside the very specialized fields. I appreciated the range of current ventures you presented and the type of discussion questions you included. Thanks!

Tod A really engaging and informative OER. As some others have mentioned, I think your site is a resource that I will use in the future. Thanks for concentrating on soft-skills, which needs a lot of looking into education-wise. Well done.

Hi Immersive Experience Team! Great work on your OER. I particularly enjoyed the section on soft skills—this is something I keep trying to teach my students to be aware of and to consider when they reflect on their growth. It was interesting to see how VR experiences translate into development of soft skills. Considering that one of the earliest cornerstones of VR was Google Maps, used to virtually 'travel' to places around the world, do you think VR will have a place in distance education and telecommuting? At first, it seems easy to imagine; live discussions simultaneously between people in China, America, Chile, and Gambia. However, when I think of the limits to distance communication now (namely, time and technological access), I wonder if this indeed will be adopted on such a global scale as the statistics suggest. Do you think further developments in VR/AR/MR and similar technologies will be influential in redefining not only the type of skills sets that will be needed for work in the future, but also the traditional elements of a 9-5 job (things like whether labour is still compensated by the hour or by other means, if the idea of working 'at' a company will change to working 'with' or 'for' a company, etc.). In short, how do you see the larger impact of immersive experience on the labour market?

Hi immersive team - amazing job! Your site flowed well; I loved the video at the start to hook us into your topic. I really liked your emphasis on soft skills as an area that VR could help with - I think about students who have autism using VR technology to practice visual cues, conversation skills, and prepare for encounters or situations that could be stressful. I’m personally excited to see where the field of VR goes, and your group gave an insightful look into the next five years! Thank you for introducing me to the Infogram tool as well - I’ll be using that in the future :)

Hey team, excellent OER. Very smooth transitions between activities, and I love how you anchored our experience of immersive experiences into a topic and applied your research, showing us how we can apply what you've learned (and learned ourselves). Thank you for your effort, I will be returning to this resource.

Immersive Experience OER creators, you've done a top notch job. The website was aesthetically pleasing, very easy to navigate and use and the content was well rounded and excellently presented. Your self created introduction worked well to set the context for the curriculum and then you followed through with meaningful content and activities that assured understanding and reflection. Overall, it comes across as a brilliant resource for getting to understand and know the XR landscape both in it's theoretical structures as well as the current applications thereof. Your pro-con lists made sure that a balanced view of XR could be gained and specifically assisted in countering possible cognitive biases against the 'validity' of XR with the benefits and uses thereof. Thanks for re-framing my understanding of XR so well and showing me where and how it is being used effectively today.
