Assignment Three

By Tyler on July 20, 2019

If technology were way farther along than it actually is, Choose Your Own Ed-venture would be the next big thing in the personalized learning market. I chose to invent my own something for this assignment. Or my own idea of a something anyhow – as there’s no coding or anything anything actually done.

The “elevator pitch” is followed by something like a Dragons’ Den style presentation.

Hello Tyler, nice presentation - very creative with the back and forth. There is certainly promise in personalizing the engagement preference for our students. I have a few questions - the first regarding the age of the student. As students develop their own preferences at different times, how would you approach situations in which a student cannot choose a preference? Would you be offering the four choices? Secondly, how would you validate the quality of the learning material for each student? For queries, Google searches may be great, but as quality may differ widely, there may be a strong data bank of textual displays compared to graphical, etc. Overall, nicely presented.

Hi Tyler, of all the presentations I saw you had one of the most unique ones and I really enjoyed how you implemented it. The Lion’s Lair was actually very encapsulating and was a perfect medium to highlight your product. In the short time that was provided, you were really able to demonstrate what your idea was and how it would be implemented. The biggest challenge I saw was that this personalization seems to be based on the idea of learning styles only. It is my understanding that learning styles have been discredited in the current landscape and the type of personalization you present may be a little bit oversimplified. Using some of the technology we saw in OERs I think the product could be enhanced through AI/algorithms making it more powerful!

Hi Tyler! I like the concept – it builds on what we learned in the OER on differentiated instruction. I also like the title for your venture. Your elevator pitch was effective – it focused both on the pain point from the perspective of the teacher, as well as the need from the student’s perspective. Saying it from the classroom made it authentic and that I should listen to what you have to say because you are coming from experience and some of the best ventures are those that stem from a genuine need on the part of the visionary themselves. The design of the venture pitch was entertaining (I particularly liked the Habs jersey, Rocket Richard and that book got me nostalgic- I remember reading it as a kid growing up in Montreal). I thought it was great that you incorporated potential questions on the part of your prospective investors in the crowd in order to show that you are equipped to answer and are well informed. My main concern is, since differentiated instruction is popular and gaining even more traction with AI, why should I invest particularly in your venture? Well, your humor and creativity definitely got you points with me. The only suggestion I would like to offer is more pertaining to the pedagogics of ed-venture: In the audio version, why have the huge slab of text at all, if the person prefers audio to visual? But if you would have the words light up/highlighted as they are read (UDL), that may already contribute more significantly to the learner. That way we are also teaching the student in their preferred medium, but possibly also helping them advance in an area where they struggle? But again, that’s just me with my pedagogic hat on speaking. My EVA hat on - I really enjoyed your pitch. Good luck!

FEEDBACK: Hi Tyler, I enjoyed watching your videos. I think the concept is really good and that you did a great job in anticipating what critics might say with your reference to Mark Speece. I think this venture is tough to get on board with because the competition is really high. There are so many companies out there that are already providing students with individualized lessons with learning analytics and AI attached that it is hard to stand out. I really appreciate the humour in Lion's Lair (clever!), but I also wonder if the humour is counter productive. I question if the humour might deter potential investors because it takes away from your professionalism. As the spearhead of your venture, perhaps you would want to appear more dependable and serious in a video that is meant to be an investor's first look.

Hey Tyler! Your video is informative, offers research-backed claims and entertaining. Any video with Rocket Richard in it is a win in my books! I appreciate that you faced Mark Speece’s findings on learning styles head-on, which is a great approach, as entrepreneurs always have to think about every conceivable angle to get ahead of the competition. You then highlighted a key point in education - that is, if we don’t have students attending school and wanting to learn, we really don’t have much, and this tool could help with student engagement. As students continue to think about the ways in which information is presented to them, this could be a good advocacy tool for them as they advance through their schooling years. Perhaps standardized testing could adopt your technology as well!
