NeighbourhoodAR

By Marc Tavares on July 28, 2019

Recently, I was walking around my favourite neighbourhood and couldn’t believe how much it changed since I was last there. The neighborhood had gentrified. Businesses tied to its cultural identity had vanished. The original people that built and made the neighbourhood thrive are dying, leaving their stories mostly untold.  For those that remain, cultural clashes occur with new residents that don’t have the knowledge or understanding of where they live. Little is being done to preserve the unique history and cultural identity of the neighbourhood for future generations to learn about. All this is happening during a time of immense opportunity for technology and learning.

I wondered,  can we preserve the cultural history of our city while at the same time enabling meaningful learning experiences? This inspired me to create NeighbourhoodAR for my Venture Pitch.

My elevator pitch can be seen here:

Please click here to view a PDF of my slide deck or here for an HTML version (use your the arrow keys on your keyboard to navigate).

UPDATE: Thank you for all your valuable feedback! Here is my reflection:

Thanks!

Marc

Hi Marc, I think you’re on to something really good here! I love the idea behind your app, and the success of Pokemon Go is a strong indicator of how quickly AR apps can gain traction. I can definitely see the value for both educational and tourism sectors. I likes your talking head video for your elevator pitch – I think keeping it clean and simple kept my focus on you and what you had to say which was great, and also very professionally done which enhances your credibility. Your slide deck is also very well done, easy to follow and beautifully designed, again, supporting the professionalism and credibility of your venture. Your idea is well researched and I feel the emphasis on the future of the VR and AR markets are important in gaining buy-in for a tool of the future. My main criticism would be that including print advertising in your marketing plan would be a bit off-putting as an investor as print advertising is pretty dead. I think some sort of experiential marketing tactic; using brand ambassadors and street teams, for example, with tablets to create buzz on the streets and give users a chance to actually experience it first-hand (and maybe download the app at that moment) could be a better use of your marketing dollars. I didn’t see anything regarding revenue generation, but I would assume there would be a cost to download the app? Or free with pop-up ads? Also, I did get a bit confused at the difference between CityLearn Ventures and Neighbourhood AR. Overall though, I am very impressed and would definitely consider investing in your venture.

Hi Marc! Your pitch video is great - clear on what your product is all about and you captured my attention, so it definitely did its job. Your pitch document was also very clean and well laid-out - I tried the HTML version first but I had to keep refreshing it for some reason, so I used your PDF version instead. You did a great job presenting your case for why AR and mobile markets are a sound investment, and I really like that you relayed the marketing strategy for your product. I feel like you covered all of the bases, and I would absolutely invest. I feel like this is an important application of AR technology, and your idea of crowdsourcing content further adds to its authenticity. It is sort of like the Google Local Guides program in that way. Amazing work.

Hi Marc. I loved this idea - I'm a history buff and am very connected to my neighbourhood. I had no difficulty following your plan, and was impressed at your grasp of the technology and how you described leveraging it. As a potential investor, I appreciated your giving me a real number that you are asking for. What I was curious about and not sure I got though was how this thing makes money and how long is it going to take for me to see some kind of return. Is the plan just to sell it off eventually? If so, I would want to know what I could expect on a sale. I would also want to know how many seats there would be on the board I'm buying my way into. It would make a difference to me whether it's three or fifteen, and whether it could keep growing, diluting my share. I hope something like this gets off the ground - I would like to use it.

Hi Marc, Great venture pitch. Your elevator pitch was to the point and really did grab my attention and this is a must for an elevator pitch. The idea of using modern technology to archive events is nothing new, this is the first time I’ve seen this implementation. The idea of sharing stories as a way to preserve cultural identity seems like a really good use of new technology. Your venture pitch is clear and covers all the requirements of a venture pitch. You have solid statistics and figures to back up you pitch and it is presented neatly to suit your needs. I really like the layout of your pitch and it shows a clear train of thought that can really sway a prospective investor. I would really have loved to see the pitch in a video presentation format.

Hello Marc, Great venture. The elevator pitch was clear and concise. The presentation was clean and easy to read. I enjoyed the fact that you did not bombard the presentation with lots of text and images. You identified the issue and provided a solution through simple explanations.
I am not sure if my personal experience, same as you, seeing old neighborhood “disappearing” that made me really like this venture. I believe that this would be an excellent tool for youngster to experience and understand the history behind it.
As an EVA, I do see the potencial of NeighbourhoodAR. Would the open database stories be available as videos, text or audio? Maybe within the presentation you could put a comparison table of what and your competitors offer, so there is a clear understanding of what makes you different.

Hello Marc, I thought your pitch was media-rich and well refined. You did a lot of research and it is apparent that you have a good working knowledge of the technology and how it can be applied to innovative business opportunities. I didn’t think your pitch was too long and was chunked out nicely so that I could follow along easily and get important information in small understandable bits. I really like the idea of super-imposing old versions of photos and text for city walkers to get an idea of how neighbourhoods transfrom and gentrify. The idea of putting personal stories into the maps is awesome, I’m sure there could even be a way to upvote and promote “important people or places” and have a social aspect where you could connect to others who have been in the same place and have told stories. I think there is a lot of potential in AR and it will quickly become commonplace in different historic areas of urban centres. I would most definately back a venture like this.

Hi Marc, this was a really delightful venture pitch to read! I feel that you established yourself early on as someone credible that I would definitely consider investing in. I agree with some of the other comments that there could have been a little more pizzazz in your video, I think your venture pitch was very well laid out and addressed. One quick bit of feedback would be the length of the presentation- 31 slides would likely be challenging to fit into an 8 minute venture pitch. However, I thought your use of graphics and statistics was very thorough and it was obvious that you had done thorough research into the market. One thing that I was not too clear about was how CityLearn is different from the competitors that you mentioned- I was trying to evaluate what benefit there would be in investing in your idea vs. your competitors. Another great selling point that I think you made was the collaboration with local non-profit organizations and businesses. I think this would be a very valuable approach and I am sure that you would get lots of buy-in from the neighbourhoods if you shared stories of these businesses. Great job overall! Sarah

Hi Marc, thank you for your unique venture pitch idea. I thought your elevator pitch was very well done and professional in it's delivery. Your venture pitch showed similar characteristics. It was very clean, organized, and easy to follow. From a visual standpoint, I thought your plan showed promising delivery of your content. Your idea is a unique and intriguing idea. I have the same thoughts as I go through my old neighbourhoods and I am sure many people do as well. NeighbourhoodAR seems like a program that can take local community and cultural understanding to the next level. I can definitely see educational applications for a program like this and I was very impressed by your business savvy that you showed in your presentation. Overall, I think you have a good idea and a great delivery method. Your pitch was justified, understandable, and related to me as an EVA, potential investor, and teacher. As for feedback, I would like to learn more about how the technology works and how the enriched media would come to fruition. I envision difficulties when trying to display 'before' pictures and videos of old towns and would instead imagine an influx of text and/or audio. Regardless, your venture pitch was well done and I am looking forward to hearing more about it in the future!

I liked your vision for this pitch. I felt that the elevator pitch could have used more ‘sizzle’, but the venture pitch infographic balanced that out. I particularly liked how you connected technology to identity building, offering a way that technology can be used for constructive purposes. I was quite impressed by the expected massive increase in augmented reality value in the next few years. I had to bookmark your well-designed venture pitch for my future inspiration. Appreciated!
