Greetings from the West Coast!

By carlo trentadue on January 6, 2020

Hello Everyone!

My name is Carlo Trentadue and I’m very excited to begin this course with you! This will be my sixth MET course so I’m hoping to see a few familiar names. Let me tell you a bit about who I am:

Educator

Having grown up in Toronto, I attended the University of Toronto and eventually the Ontario Tech University (formerly known as the University of Ontario Institute of Technology). I was very fortunate to then begin the initial years of my education career teaching English and Humanities at an all-boys private high school. More recently, I made a move across the country to pursue a similar opportunity out here on the West Coast. I now live in Vancouver where I teach English and Social Studies at an independent school. My summers are usually spent working on credit-abroad courses where I teach Grade 12 English while travelling through various countries. This past summer was spent journeying through Belize and Costa Rica.

Coach

My teaching experiences are almost always accompanied by equally impactful coaching opportunities. I am passionate about what sport can do for our youth, especially when it comes to the game of football. I was fortunate enough to secure a Coordinator position for a youth community team in Toronto for a number of years. Coupling that experience with participation in a number of cross-Canada tournaments and all-star teams, I eventually became the head coach of that program. My move to Vancouver yielded similar opportunities as I have now inherited the head coaching position for the JV squad at the school I currently work at.

Traveler

I’ve always said there is a stark difference between a tourist and a traveler. On top of teaching and coaching, I am an avid traveler. I’ve spent a number of months in Central America for both work, service, and leisure, however, among the places I’ve visited, India has been the most impactful to me. I spent some time in traveling through the province of Rajasthan in 2018 with a group of students who made it their goal to aid in impoverished areas by helping to build a school and educate the community on women’s rights. It was deeply impactful to witness the stark cultural differences of our education system to that of a small school in the deserts of Rajasthan.

Looking forward to working with you all

Carlo, I just read about your experience in Rajasthan after my reply to your comment on my post. The trip sounded amazing! I would love to go back to India one day. I also love your distinction between being a tourist and a traveller. What I love most about working abroad is the ability to spend more time integrating into a county's culture, even though it may be for just a fraction of our life.

Hi Carlo! Im also passionate about Football. One of my biggest regrets was not being on a team in high school as they were not enough people wanting to participate, however the year after I graduated my school got a football program. Best of luck in this class and term. Looking forward to working with you.

HI Carlo, I love your distinction between being a tourist or a traveller! I too am an avid traveller (and often avoid going where other tourists go). India, and specifically Rajasthan, is amazing and one of my most impactful trips too! I spent 6 months traveling India in 2011 and volunteering at an orphanage. Look forward to getting to know and work with you this semester.
