Hello, from Merritt, B.C.

By Robert on January 6, 2020

Hi all,

My name is Robert and I am looking forward to working with all of you.  I live in Merritt B.C. where I teach grade 11/12 at an online school.  I actually ended up teaching online by accident.  When I was applying on the job I thought it was a traditional classroom job.  While the learning curve was steep it has been an amazing experience and what led me to Masters in Educational Technology program at UBC.  I also develop lessons (video and written) for online math courses and have developed several online courses for various organizations.

When I’m not teaching or working on school work you will find me working on my house, in the garden, or out fishing. With so much time spent in front of a computer for work and school I find myself trying to get as far away from screens as I can in my free time.

I am taking this course as I am very interested in the opportunities that technology is bringing to education.  While I am interested professionally, my real interest is personal in exploring the entrepreneurial opportunities and world of educational technologies.  I have enjoyed my work developing courses and content and am interested in potentially expanding beyond that.

Hi Robert, It's nice to meet you! I'm curious to know what platform and specific technology you use for developing your lessons (video and written) for your online math courses? I agree with your point about there being so many opportunities that technology is bringing to education. We live at a very exciting time for this. I like how you mention the importance of getting some time away from screens - especially to enjoy nature and the outdoors! That is important! Looking forward to working with you in this course!

Good morning Robert, thank you for the comment on my post! I'm interested in learning more about what the online teaching experience is like and how you've navigated the learning curve. I'm a fellow gardener focused on native plants and diverse veggies I started from West Coast Seeds and Baker Creek in the States. One of my goals this year is to document my gardening process with photos, videos and tutorials. What's in your garden? Nice to meet you and best to you this semester!

Nice to meet you Robert! I like that you stumbled upon your job by accident and stuck through with it. I just recently became a home-owner myself and I'm looking forward to the hard work that comes along with it. Cheers!

Hi Robert I am looking forward to working with you in this class. I have to say that I took a road trip through BC last summer to Alberta and had the chance to stay in Merritt on our way through. It was pretty amazing being out there. Merritt was bigger than I expected. Chat soon.
