Kumusta po from the Philippines

By kevin spachuk on January 7, 2020

My name is Kevin and this is my second course in the MET program–this semester I’ll try to take two MET courses (ETEC 530) and teach a full load of junior and senior classes…I hope I can do it. I’ve been a secondary teacher of English for about 15 years. For the last five years I’ve taught in Japan and now the Philippines. I am always looking for new tech solutions and resources to increase engagement and support assessment. Fortunately and unfortunately, Brent International where I teach isn’t 1:1 school or has any particular recommended platform though Apple seems to be the most supported. I feel this will be challenging but great course for developing my skills in analysing the impact of ed tech and media in the classroom.

Over the winter break, I traveled around Vietnam from Ho Chi Minh to Hanoi, then to Da Nang and Hoi An–it was amazing and there was great food at every corner. I read some popular tech books 24/6 by Tiffany Shlain (I love her tech shabbat idea) and Because Internet by Gretchen McCullosh both of which I would recommend. I met my Reading Challenge on Goodreads and set new goal for 2020.  In response to the question as to what websites I visit daily, Goodreads is one website that I use almost daily for connecting with my friends and students to see what they are reading. Also, I tend to listen daily to my old radio station in Los Angeles where I lived 6 years ago–KCRW–I believe still has some of the best new music programming. I check Facebook too much–especially since I belong to groups for IB and AP teachers and receive lots of good ideas for teaching.

Hi Kevin, Thanks for sharing your background with us and for the KCRW tip! I'm also setting reading challenges on Goodreads but for the last couple of years most of my readings were connected to my studies. I'm missing reading random books and fiction!

Nice to meet you Kevin. I also just recently returned from teaching EFL in Japan. How long were you there for? What was your experience like? Looking forward to this class!

Hi Kevin, I am thrilled to see that we have a class with people from right around the world. What is life like in the Philippines and what have been some of the unique challenges of teaching and working there that you have encountered? I also just wanted to add- you can absolutely do your two courses this term! It's a lot of sacrifice in terms of personal time but believe me when I say there are at least enough hours in the day to make it happen alongside your full time job. At the very least, we can support each other when we feel like it's getting too much as I'll be doing two courses as well (like I've done before).
