Hello,

By Ram on January 8, 2020

My name is Ram Etwaroo. I have a rather checkered story about where I live. I am displaced from Fort McMurray because my house was burnt in the Fort McMurray fire and my family were in Ontario while I continued to work in Alberta and BC. I taught in Fort McMurray, Northern Alberta and BC. After the Fort McMurray fire I lived and taught in First Nations communities.  I lived in housing in the communities so that worked out well. I taught high school Math and Science.

This is my 7th MET course; I completed ETEC530 and ETEC521 all  the core courses.

One thing I would like to share is about my name. As you can see, my full name is Ramnarine Etwaroo but I go by the shorter version of Ram Etwaroo.  When I came to Canada and initially said my name, I was asked if I could be called “Ram” and of course that was great! So now I always go by Ram. My first name is spelt wrong, I believe it should be Ramnarayan. So now when I say my first name I say Ramnarayan. There is a story behind this but I would skip it. In short, parents would say the name of the new born child to officials registering the birth who would misspell the name. As a result, I do not know what my last name should really be because “Etwaroo” means nothing to me whereas I know what “Ram” means and also what “Ramnarayan” means. Once a university residence assumed that Ramnarine was a female name and assigned me a dorm room with a very attractive female of the same ethnicity. I got the room for myself until they assigned another student.

I look forward to working with you in this course.

Ram

9 Jan Posted on Hello,

Hi Ram, thanks for sharing the story about your name! A similar situation happened to my uncle and his family when they immigrated to Canada from Macedonia. Their last name, as it was spelled on the registry when they arrived was "Popofski", but apparently it should have been "Popovski".

8 Jan Posted on Hello,

Hi Ram! Hopefully you will remember me from last term's ETEC521 where we shared a class. Looking forward to sharing another class with you again this term! I was wondering whether you had completed ETEC533 yet or are planning to? Since you are a Maths and Science teacher you might really enjoy the course if you haven't yet considered it.
