Top 10 Strategic Technologies Impacting Higher Education in 2019 by Gartner

Top 10 Strategic Technologies Impacting Higher Education in 2019
and using Gartner as a resource* (see the Access section below if links are not working)

Gartner is a research and advisory company focused on providing tech and business insights to executive and senior level-leaders. According to their website, they serve over 15,600 organizations across 100 countries including 73% of the Global 500 companies. Gartner provides research, analysis and projections on the future of business, including the education and educational technology sectors.

Focus: This 2019 report targets 10 strategic technologies and provides a definition, findings, implications, recommendations and further reading for each. Although some of these technologies can be categorized under the existing umbrellas of emerging technologies found our 522 Emerging Markets forum, there are some niche technologies that may be new to us, such as (but not limited to) nudge tech and student cross-life cycle CRM.

Figure 1. Top Business and Technology Trends in Higher Education (Morgan, Lowendahl, Thayer, & Yanckello, 2019)

Though David Vogt and others have previously posted Gartner reports and research in the forum, this Top 10 report is new to the forum and focuses on technologies in higher education. A 2020 report has not been released, but other related 2020 reports have been published by Gartner, so perhaps a new report is coming soon. There is also a K-12 report for those who are interested.

Importance: This report and resource would typically be accessed by executives and senior-level leaders in higher education institutions. There are insights here that these decision makers will use to shape the future of education, but the information provided is valuable to stakeholders at all levels, and in particular, to us as educators, educational technology students, and movers and shakers within this space.

*Access: As UBC students, we have access to Gartner’s wealth of information, including market projections and peer reviews on IT solutions, but we first need to connect the resource using the library database search. Search Gartner, click the Gartner link above the search result #1, and you will be able to click through to Connect to the Resource and access information directly on the Garner site.
