Knowledgeworks – Navigating the Future of Learning Forecast 5.0

By shuebrook on January 17, 2020

Knowledgeworks.org is a private consultancy group founded in 2000. They are based in Ohio, USA and offer articles and workshops on personalized learning and competency-based learning to schools, districts and educational policymakers. Their market forecast document Navigating the Future of Learning Forecast 5.0 identifies 5 “drivers of change” that provide a thought-provoking counterpoint to both the large corporate predictions (e.g. Gartner, McKinsey, Deloitte) and to NGO publications (e.g. OECD, UNESCO, WEF).

WARNING: While this “forecast” is recurrent, keep in mind that “prediction” is not a core competency of this group, and their publications may not be as much research-based as other sources.

I think this Market Projection is very useful to the broader community of educators and learning technology specialists. It was directly written to the landscape of teaching and learning. I was interested to perceive how the five drivers of change described were not all positive and not all about because this is the reality. For instance, the mention of Toxic Narratives and how they contribute to mental illnesses was something I hadn’t expected but I see how this could have an influence and impact and we should be taken into consideration. To be aware of positive and not so positive trend is important in order to appropriately operate and evolve in the changing world of learning technology. As this report says: “We can also identify where we might want to intervene, harness or adapt to shape a future of learning in which all students can thrive.” This and the idea of stewardship is so important for everyone involved in the world of educational technology. I will most definitely seek out future versions of this report. I liked the approach and the methodology around which it was based and recommendations were made. I think this forecast was straightforward and practical and the opinions on exploration and responsibilities of all.
