Metafact

By Carla Pretorius on January 26, 2020

Metafact realizes that the challenge we face in our modern lives is not the act of finding information (we are bombarded by information) but sifting through numerous sources to find credible facts and answers to our questions. The guys behind this platform aim to bring experts in various fields (sciences to health professionals) together to answer any question that you might have. Think Quora but with verified experts to answer your questions. They are asking for donations on Kickstarter to help establish their fact-checking platform and have already worked with over 11 000 verified experts.

No, I would not invest in this venture. While the pitch does an excellent job of describing the product/service and its benefits to the users, it does not talk about the venture from a viability point of view for investors. Also, it does highlight the market gap--misleading information, too much information, etc., but it does not address product differentiation as to how is it better from the services offered by competitors. On the other hand, if this is an original venture, then it does not mention that, and this lapse would make a potential investor think if the founders have done their homework in terms of market study. The pitch lacks information on leadership credibility such as their background or past projects that could inspire trust and confidence. There is no mention of market share, revenue, returns for investors, potential risks for investors, and exit strategy. Therefore, while I do see the value of the product itself, the factors listed above would certainly prevent me from investing in it.

I would invest in this venture. It's clear from the founder's pitch what the pain point is (addressing the plethora of fake and misleading information out there). Funding will go towards creating a stable platform to host the venture and judging by similar sites such as Quora I think the odds are good that they will be successful in this market. Their differentiation is that they will rely on experts to answer questions and use AI to track the similarity in answers as a measure of reliability. Since the venture leaders are scientists themselves, I have a lot of faith in their leadership of this venture as they obviously are passionate about helping people find the right answers to questions. The return on investment won't be an obvious financial return but will be more of a chance to take part in something to better everyone's experience of the internet and with fake news trending currently, this could be seen as a way to combat such influences as proactive digital citizens.
